I think Oldtuleguy could settle this once and for all since his father was a tool designer from Plomb in the mid 1940s. Surely he head his Dad say the name the way that it was pronounced at the company. I will reach out to him to see if he can shed some light.

In my mind (at least), I think this matter is settled. I am a member of the “Plomb Tools Enthusiasts and Collectors” group on Facebook and one of our members is Pete Plomb. Pete is the great grandson of Jules Plomb, and Jules Plomb was the brother of Alphonse Plomb. Someone asked Pete how they pronounced their family name and this was his reply;

So I guess is it pronounced like “plum” after all. And if the family says so, that is good enough for me.

Looks like French would be P-Lohm. B is silent, also pronounced Pl-ohm-b when referred in fishing. So end of the day pick one and run with it. It's effectively americanized so both are correct.

Like bomb, I dont know why you would pronounce an O as a U. Then again I went to a public school.
A lot of the tools had the letter “o” replaced with an upside down triangle that looks like a “v”

old latin text has v’s where u’s would go

Combine these two then that’s how I see it so that could be why if I’m not alone

I've said this before when the subject has come up on the Plomb thread on the vintage board, but I'll repeat it here. With so many credible available options from other words in our language to choose from - e.g., comb (oh), bomb (ah), or womb (oo), it would seem like it could be pronounced like any one of them, and hard to assert one of them over the other. It's very instructive, though, and, in my opinion, impossible to argue in good faith against the idea that a company who consciously incorporates plumb bob imagery into their trademark application, plumb bob imagery into their marketing, and plumb bob imagery into their very name sure seems to be practically begging you to pronounce it like "plumb".
