Looking for recommendations from someone who has done it for a great polyurea installer in the Austin/San Antonio area.

I'm in Austin (well Round Rock) and the only person I could find that I felt was qualified (I had a terrible experience hiring a company in Austin before on my other house) was booked about 6 months out and was EXPENSIVE.

I did it myself and if I had to do it again... would do it myself without any hesitation.

The most "difficult" part is prepping the floor. But it's really not that difficult, it's just messy and not terribly fun.

I'd be happy to help if you're close.

Things to look for with an installer from my experience.

1. Full grind of the floor.
Any company that says they "acid etch" or they etch but then grind only certain areas... are not doing the job correctly.

2. Ask about the product they use. The ACTUAL product so you can look up the specs on it.
Basically make sure you're getting what you pay for

3. Most companies will give you a higher quote for a "second clear coat" as if a single clear will do the job.
Either pay for the second coat for find someone that does it included. (the guy I found includes it I believe. You will absolutely need a second coat unless you basically never do any work in your garage. But even then a single coat... I personally wouldn't trust it. The company that I hired before did a single coat and it lifted after about six months. That was also probably due to the fact that they screwed up plenty of other things... but still. Get a second clear coat.

I tried to remember the person I found before but I can't find him or remember who it was. I can tell you who NOT to choose if you want to PM me. But that's just one company out of many that I found to be... less than qualified.

are you having the "stink" issues people seem to complain about with poly/urea?

We used these guys for our main garage a year ago http://www.garagemonkeyz.com/. Was recommended by a rather well off friend who is a stickler for quality.

So far no complaints for ours. Admittedly low traffic compared to a proper working shop but installers ground everything and seemed to know their stuff.

The problem I had was from the one jcarapet just mentioned. I wasn't going to out them publicly, but since they're in the thread... there you go.

I would absolutely in no way hire garagemonkeyz.

I didn't have any odor issues no.

My issues were the following:

1st day was supposed to be finished in one day. Took two days because they showed up around noon instead of early in the morning.

So that was annoying but whatever.

When they "finished" the floor was sharp in places because they didn't bother to take the time to scrape the flake so it was literally spikey in 2/3 of the floor area.... shoddy... lazy... or incompetent?

After arguing for several days (a little over a week) about the floor being rough the owner finally came out to the house to see for himself because of course I would have no idea if the floor was rough on my own garage?

He came out and agreed.

2nd time they came out they didn't bother to even clean the floor before putting down another layer of clear after they scraped the high spots.

How do I know this?

Because it took so long for them to come back out (you know because I had no idea about how smooth the floor was supposed to be?) I had been using the garage to park my cars.

One of my cars leaks oil (it's a '91 so aver 30 years old now) and wouldn't you know there were oil spots right under the clear right where my car had been parked.

So they didn't even bother to sweep it much less clean it.

I called AGAIN and was told there was "no way they wouldn't have cleaned the floor."

Until of course I sent them photographs of the oil and then yeah.

So they sent a guy out to basically spot grind the floor and get rid of the issues. But the floor was never right. It lifted all over the place because... shocker... they didn't bother to clean it.

What they SHOULD have done was come out and completely re-do the floor but of course that would have cost money to the business so that never happened.

I wouldn't hire them to paint my mailbox.

I used Garage Experts for a 50x70 workshop and was impressed by their equipment, experience, and execution. Wasn't cheap, but I'd definitely use them again.

There are some pics in the first post of the thread in my signature.
