My 1.0 hp pool motor will not start. When it is turned on it just hums, but does not turn over and will then trip the breaker. Can a bad capacitor cause this, and if so how can I check the capacitor to see if it is the problem? Thanks!

The impeller is probably seized. Pool pumps are rarely worth fixing. It'll be much more cost-effective and easier just to buy a new one.

Make sure you re-evaluate your pool size and see if you really need a pump that big.

Bad capacitor, bad start relay/contacts, bad bearings, seized impeller (or something in the impeller) all can cause this. If you can, see if the motor will turn at all (perhaps remove end cap and try spinning it by hand) or is seized.

If this is on a sand filter, just buy a replacement motor/pump unit. They are under $200 if you shop. Not worth trying to fix. I just tossed one, personally.

Just went through replacing my single speed 2 hp pump. I could have gotten a new motor put in for around $150-200 (i can't recall). I ended up getting a new variable speed pump for 800 or 900 online. It is literally saving me about $40 a month on electric and it's much quieter. You can save money going with a cheaper 2 speed pump--but either way something to really consider in fixing your pump.

Funny I see this thread now, just got back from a friends house where his pump quit working. Pulled it apart and found some leaves and debris had gotten inside and locked it up. Cleaned everything up and it took off again like it should.

Take a look and make sure there isn't anything in it before you buy another one.

Impeller turns fine, bearings are smooth and quiet, so the motor or capacitor must be bad I'm guessing. Thanks for the replies!

When mine went last spring, Everything spun freely too. The seal between the casing and the motor had wore out. Had it replaced by a pool place here. Just to note I was told Florida just recently adopted the California 2 speed pump law stating from here out if the whole pump system needs to be replaced you have to install the 2 speed motor. Something about being more electrically efficient. More money for the pump systems though. You can order and just replace the motor with a single speed with no problem. Apparently the pool places cant sell you a single speed pump system anymore in Florida?

You can get single speed motors here in florida all day but it woudn't make sense to do it. The 2 speed pump will pay for itself in no time
