Poor mans Snap on Adjustable

At work the other day and used a co-workers adjustable. The SO part number is FADH6A. I understand it might seem silly to worry about spending $50 for a snap on adjustable but please understand I am still in college, only recently starting working as a mechanic (during the summer months), and do not currently plan on doing this for a living.

If anyone could recommend me a similarly styled adjustable it would be much appreciated. I particularly like the straight-on angle that the adjustable opens up at in comparison to the handle.

If that's the one you really like. Then be patient and keep your eye on CL or ebay. Eventually something will come up that will be in a better price range.

+1 on the Channellock Adjustable. I have two of the 8" and use them both very often. Much better price point if you're not sticking around in the trades.

Also, I'm not a fan of big fat comfort grips, with exception of those channellocks.

I'm genuinely curious as to why you don't find the $12 Bahco labeled version to be a viable alternative.

I would just buy the Bahco equivalent. I have a 9031T, Slim Jaw Wide Mouth 8" with "ERGO" grip.
AFAIK the Snap On is a rebranded Bahco with the Flank Drive Plus system on it. I don't own the Snap On, but it seems on pictures that the jaws are perfectly flat like the Bahco, could anyone verify/bust this statement?
If I'm right, the Snap On adjustables aren't Made in USA but in Spain. Besides, Bahco aren't bad at making adjustables, they are like pioneers in the adjustable wrench category.

I have a Bahco 9072 10". Its the older style ergo grip made in Sweden. It has the reversible jaw for use as a pipe wrench. Highly recommend.

It is literally the same tool, minus the FD+. It is, as the OP said he wanted, a poor mans SO Adjustable. The SO adjustable wrenches are listed as being made in Spain because they are made by Bahco in Spain.

Oh okay so they do actually have FD+, it just seems flat on pictures :willy_nil But yeah I know that Bahco made them for them, they are really good in my opinion. I wouldn't hesitate to buy more, but I am also quite fond of Bahco :D

i have a full set of the cushion grip Snap On's and find I don't use them nearly as much as the 8" wide mouth channellock one I have. I plan to pick up the 6" version if I can find one at a decent price. I've never seen the Bahcos in person but like others have said they're pretty much the same as the Snap on's except the color and price.

You can find any style of pump pliers and adjustable wrenches you want used for under $5. Save your money and buy a used Chanel lock. All the Us brands are good. Snappie is so over priced it makes me pee in my pants at half price. I buy and sell all the brands but I make so much more on the Snap-on's because of all the fools out there who are welling to spend the money. I think it is a hoot. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Last week I bought a double set of Snap-on sockets here on the GJ. They were Shallow and Deeps. 3/8" to 1-1/4' I paid $190 to the door and have already sold the shallow set for $140 without shipping. I gave the deep set to my grandson and the last set on E bay sold for $210 plus shipping. I flip tools every week. I also have a second hand store with a tool section. I sell every Craftsman tools so fast I can't find enough. The other fast mover is Snap-on. They might be perfection but they sure are not worth the price.

Crescent has moved offshore, hasen't it? The older ones were and still are unbeatable. The last time I looked Craftsman still had US made adjustables. I would check flea markets and pawn shops for older Crescents.

Maybe you should try the wide mouth Snap On's, they're extremely wide in my opinion. My 8" Wide Mouth Bahco opens wider than my dads 12" regular Bahco. :D

lol I have those as well. I find them handiest when the channellock's bigger handle gets in the way. My only issue with the snap on's is that you set them to a size and they creep almost every time you turn the fastener and I have to keep readjusting it. The channellocks creep quite a bit less and they normally stay put long enough to get most fasteners off without readjustment.

Oh okay, never tried the Channellocks. We don't have Channellock in Denmark :p I don't really use adjustables that much, but when I do, my Bahco's always come through for me :D You're right though, they do creep a bit, less then any other I've tried though.

you said you wanted a cheap SO wrench, Bahco are owned by SO so if you buy one you're therefore getting a cheap SO wrench. Honestly out of all he engineers I have ever worked with all of them have Bahcos and none would have a bad thing to say about them.

Thanks for all the help everyone. Obviously never meant to start a SO vs (insert tool brand) thread, but all of these options are exactly what I was looking for.

The adjustable has come a long way. Used to be cheap imposts were junk, now you can get something like the ATD 4 piece set for not mush more than a 20 to 12 inch and they are world class, actually like them as good or better than all the brands. I got most of them.

There are a couple cheap ones in there but you would never know it by using them. Those just happened to be laying there, got some Diamond, Crecent, a Snappy, Channelock, Cman

Why buy the SO over the bahco, because I cant have my SO rep replace the bahco unit when or if it fails. Although for the price I could buy two bahco's and still save money compared to one SO lol.

******** SO's mark up is ridiculous. Even if SO paid $5 for the wrench, heck they sell the 10" for what $60. ******** I want to smack this company in the face. Here is what I hate about snap on (I own lots of snap on) if my tool brakes or fail's, my rep needs to replace it and hes only covered if SO covers him. If not he ends up eating the cost. They make how much money a year, he makes how much money a year. Snap on is pushing all their losses off on to the little guy and making him eat it rather than doing justice when they can better afford to eat it. I would like to mention my SO rep does not ***** about this so its not like I am pushing what hes preaching.

Unfortunately I think your point varies alot from rep to rep. My father has been a mechanic for 20+ years, and used to love snapon until we got a new rep in our area, who does not like to stand behind the warranty if he has to eat the cost. A lot of the old ratchets that my dad has, he wont warranty or will say "you either need to pay the difference for the newer model, or wait until someone trades in the same model." I agree with you that if SO would eat the cost sometimes they would have happier clients.

For what its worth, I just ordered the Channellock Wide Opening Adjustable Wrench-6in #6WCB off of Northern Tool's ebay page for $24.98 shipped.

Pick yourself up a used Diamond brand (Duluth, MN) or a Williams Superjustable for a couple bucks at a garage sale and save yourself some major cash.

Picked up a 6" Channellock adjustable tonight. It is marked Spain. I'm not real impressed with Channellock pliers but I was pretty impressed with this adjustable wrench.

This thread got me doing a bit more research on the Bahco adjustables. Seems they make an 8" adjustable (9031 RT US) that they claim is 45% thinner and opens 45% wider. Looks like this:

This. I have a 12" Williams, 10" Diamond, 8" Utica, and a 6" Ace branded Williams. Unless you just feel like spending more money, you're not going to do much better than those.

They really are wide jaw adjustables. I got an 18" adjustable, not Bahco though, that only opens about 1cm more my 8" Bahcos.

The 45% thinner thing isnt really applicable as it gets wider towards the handle. Great wrenches though, I don't think you'll be dissappointed.
