Poor Person's Hub Tamer/Grappler?

Years ago I bought the HF on car bearing press kit and it's been fine but I recently blew the threads off of the drive bolt.

The shop has an OTC kit and it uses washers where an old co-worker of mine had an OTC kit that used a bearing instead of washers that worked a lot nicer.

Now I want to get a new bolt and a bearing to use with my HF kit. The cups and drivers will work fine. Are there any options besides going buying the OTC parts? Would threaded rod and another bearing work?

If you are just replacing the bolt with with same thing, then replace with a grade 8 bolt at an hardware store like Ace Hardware. You can buy bearing that fit that diameter there, too.

You can make one from 3/4 -16 threaded rod. you can get it in grade 8 from mcmaster carr for about 10.00. get the matching 3/4 coupler nut for the end as well, just weld a 3/4 nut to the other end . you can get a matching 3/4 bearing from mcmaster carr as a well.

I have a few different bearings from puller kits, like harmonic balancer installer kit and pulley puller kit. I have used these for different pulling tasks in the past. Would just do that and some all thread and be done with it.

Heavily oil the rod. That makes all the difference.

Fine thread 3/4" is not the most popular size. I finally found some grade 8 in the bin at Fastenal but they were very short, like 1 1/2". I don't remember if they had bigger. It is good McMaster Carr has rod. Just use lots of grease to extend thread life. Moly is good for pullers and such.

Everything has basically been said. My only recommendation is white lithium grease on the threads. It doesn't attract dirt or make a huge mess when fumbling around with the bolt.

Like another poster mentioned, replaced the bolt with a grade 8 bolt and nut and add a bearing. A threaded rod will work for a while but the threads will blow out the same with the HF forcing screw.
