Poorly Compacted Soil

Hello. I am not sure if this is the correct forum for this type of issue, but I am hoping that someone might have some suggestions to fix my poorly compacted soil issue.

Due to a broken line from the septic tank to the leech lines, the septic company had to trench down the side of the long driveway leading into my back field. It was January, the ground was muddy…they did not compact the dirt correctly. It looked fine on top, but a few months later a large tree trimming truck got stuck in my drive because it sunk in places. I am not sure how to remedy the problem so that big trucks will not continue to get stuck.

Do I need to dig it up again? Add gravel or something else to the dirt to fill in the holes and trenches? I am not sure who to call that would be able to come help.

Assuming you have proper drainage, mother nature will fix it, but it will take a couple of years.

You did not say how deep the trench is, I would add a little fill in the depressed areas and let it settle before adding more. I have filled muddy holes in pathways by dropping a few rocks every time I walked or drove on the path

Thank you both so much for your advice! I appreciate it. I think I will add a little dirt at a time with some rocks and let Mother Nature take care of it. A big tree trimming truck filled with chips and a lift on top drove through there yesterday and didn’t sink any further than the last truck, so hopefully it has settled as much as it’s going to. It has been nerve-wracking trying to figure out how to fix the problem and make sure it is ready for large trucks when needed. Thank you again!!

Sure, you could dig it all out and replace it with fill of optimal moisture content in 6"-10" lifts and compact it on the way up, but that's way too much work. I would just keep adding a little to the top as necessary.

You didn’t really provide enough info.

Is this the line to the tank or from the tank to the septic field?

Where they are getting stuck, is it a proper gravel drive that was trenched across or is it trucks driving through the grass?

Do you know how deep the line is and the material/thickness?

Most septic systems pipes you are never supposed to drive across, especially for the first few years until the dirt settles. You are never supposed to drive over the septic field period.

If it’s across a drive they should of used at least schedule 40. Most of the time from the house to the tank is but after the tank will be schedule 10.
