Pop Rivet Stopper Kit-anyone ever use something like this?

Has anyone used anything like this? I've been drilling out rivets for years and never heard of it. Steck no longer makes this which makes me wonder if it doesn't work well. I think this could be helpful especially when drilling out rivets on window regulators.

Well I bought it cuz well....I wanted it. I'm surprised no one on GJ has used/heard of it.

I personally had never ran across that tool. Even in the autobody tool catalogs.

I sent Steck an email. They are always great about providing information.

I heard back from STECK. They said that the only person who would possibly know about this tool retired a few years ago and they have no more records of it. Very interesting because it doesn't seem like it's that old.

So looks like it just holds the rivet flange to keep it from spinning while you drill out the center of the river. Might come in handy but usually if I'm drilling out a rivet it's for a reason and doesn't matter if the head spins and creates a little surface damage.

I have something similar made by Aircraft Supply, don't use it very often, but it has saved my skin on a couple of occasions. They also make one for removing solid rivets which I use all the time, very useful tools and in the tradition of this forum everyone should go out and buy both.

I agree it appears it will be useful I just wonder why they (STECK) stopped making/selling it. That always leads me. To believe it's a crappy tool or one that doesn't warrant having. I definitely could have used this drilling out rivets on my Fox body Mustang windows. I have a lot more to drill out so can't wait to use it.

No doubt they stopped selling it due to lack of sales. I can't think of a single time that I would have needed that and I've been drilling rivets for a lot of decades.

I've always had good luck just shaving the top off the rivet with a 3/8" drill bit and tapping out the body with a punch. I haven't had one spin on me yet. This tool might be better for large volumes of rivets where the spin marks are not allowed, perhaps aircraft work.

STECK makes auto body tools so this was definitely geared towards the body field. My guess is rivets for door glass and rivets holding plastic parts together because when they spin it eats the plastic.

I’ve had enough rivets spin while I was trying to drill them that I would have used that tool if I had one. My solution for spinning rivets, if just pushing harder doesn’t work, is usually to tilt the drill at an angle and rotate the drill.

If the sizes are workable what I’d use this for is riv nuts. Those often fail by getting loose and then they spin when you try to remove them.

Agreed. Sometimes putting some pressure upward underneath with a flathead screwdriver works as well

Yup! Would be nice to take a rear bumper off a Chevy without melting the bumper brackets
