Pop rivets, well, didn't pop. Suggestions?

I have a pneumatic pop riveter for a project I'm working on. A few of the stems didn't come off, though the rivet is tight. I moved on, and tried my hand pop riveter to remove them. It worked for one. Both riveters seem to have trouble grabbing the pins.

Any good ides to remove them that won't screw up the powder coat?

Don't you hate it when that happens!
I usually get broken ones from my air hydraulic riveter now and again. I got myself a hand puller one that has a deeper longer grip length. With that I can finish the pop.
When this fails I drill it out and re-pop with a new rivet. The stem needs to be there for a rivet to keep it's integrity over time.

Not good form, but we always just stuck the gun back on there. Tough ones like some stainless steel would take a few "pops". If the rivet was seated properly and the stem just wouldn't break off then we would just wiggle the barrel of the gun to move them back and forth until it broke off. This was in a production environment where speed was the most important thing.

Take the Gun apart and clean the Jaws. Chances are they have build up and will not bite the stem. Also clean the "barrel" the Jaws ride in. Any little bits of metal can impede on the bite also.

Use some very light oil or dry lube on the outer surface of the Jaws.

When ever it takes more than 1 "pull" I clean the Jaws and the problem goes away until it is time for new Jaws. They do wear out.

Also make sure you are using the correct grip range Rivet. If the Grip Range is too big it can and will take more than 1 pull.

One other issue may cause the Jaws not to bite as soon as they should is Air Pressure. Our Rivet Guns are designed for 95 psi. Anything over 100 psi and we run into problems where the faster action causes the Jaws to grab higher on the stem giving it less pull distance. Took us a long time to figure that one out.

Let us know what worked...

I second the put the gun on again approach, thats what we used to do at work as well.. we used to make 54 draw units in steel for schools.. 4 rivits per draw (2 for each runner) so yeh speed was the key..

I also found the pin had a thin clear coating to stop rust while in storage.. that used to coat the teeth until they were smooth, when you were using 10's of thousands of them a day..

So I cleaned the gun (again) and turned the pressure down to 90 (from 110). It worked much better, failing 1 out of 50 instead of 1 out of 10.

I don't think the cleaning did much, because I cleaned it before. I think the pressure made a big difference. Thank you for your help.

Great. Now try adding a couple of drops of light oil to the air inlet of the Gun.
