I'm considering a porcelain garage floor as I like the looks. Does anyone have one that he welds over. I'm wondering how it will hold up to sparks.

I don't know about porcelain personally, but I have heard good thing about quarry tile being used in welding environments. A friend of mine tig welded for a sheet metal company and they used quarry tiles in the welding areas.

Unless you are welding really close to the tile the spatter will most likely have cooled enough to not harm the tile. If the porcelain is glazed it will be more likely to get small burn/melt marks from the spatter. Most likely won't happen.

I would think porcelain would be excellent. I was also considering a Race Deck or similar solution where I could replace tiles easily and not to expensive if limited to a welding area only. I'm also still considering the Race deck border option, where all edges of the garage that stuff gets put on, is on Race Deck then the middle is Epoxy. That makes it very easy to redo the epoxy every couple of years because next to nothing would have to be moved out of the garage.

There was a race deck thread where someone welded on it and was very unhappy. I think it's just smart to cover the floor when welding. If that is too much trouble then leave it and stain and seal the concrete.

Yes if you are looking for a showroom look at all times then race deck is absolutely a no no in a welding area. But if you can live with a few burn holes for a while and occasionally replace a couple of tiles it may not be a bad idea. Most of my welding is TIG on the bench or stick outside.

I've welded over my porcelain tile with no problems. The burn marks on the workbench and the fire in the waste basket were a whole other issue, though.:willy_nil
