Porcelain Tile Floor Care...

I haven't been around much lately, but I thought I would post a photo illustrating all the extra work I go through protecting my porcelain tile floor while working in the garage... or don't.



I started off putting down mats or plywood, cardboard, etc. Now I just randomly drop transmissions on it. Well, not literally, that probably would crack it. Only thing I have run in to so far is that gear oil and / or power steering fluid darkened the "stain proof" grout some. Still very happy, and still need to finish the other section.

It will be porcelain tile for my garage. I can't imagine using anything else. I want to do it once, do it right and never have to do it again.

I guess you don't have to worry about the no jackstands leaving a mark on the tile. Let us know how the tile looks in a year or so if you live that long.

Mines been down 3+ years & pretty much looks like the day it went down. At first, I would cover when welding, now I don’t even bother. Grout is gray & it has darkened a bit which is ok with me. Tile is PE5 & has a no slip type of finish when wet (slightly rough sandy feel). It’s also variegated so still looks good when dirty.

I'm serious when I say this, thanks for looking out for safety. You make a good point, it is not safe to be under there as shown in this picture. If you look past the jack pad, you can see one jack stand, and I'm pretty sure the other can't be seen because the drivers side tire / wheel are blocking the view. I had the thought to take this pic after dropping the trans, and had to fully extend the jack and pull the stands back to get the ****** out from under the truck. While I'm sure I had limbs under there moving the ****** jack, the truck was securely on stands before and after while I was under there.

Sorry I didn't see this previously, but did want to address it for others looking at the pic. I'm still alive, and the clutch is doing great !

I so want to do this...we're tiling the upper part of our garage and I keep thinking why not do the entire thing.

Is it a bad idea to use 12x24 tiles?

Our garage is almost dead even side to side and I think perfect for tiling.

The hardest thing in porcelain tile is to "trust" it.
Did the same thing, mats , cardboard etc, then just said f**k it.

I used 13x13 tile , you have to be very good for 12x24,
I did 12x24 in a small bathroom and it was tough for a amateur , but turned out great

12x24 tiles do require a bit more skill and time for installation, but it's an excellent option!

Same here... never liked redecorating. I prefer doing it twice during my lifetime (maximum).

Our garage is almost dead even side to side and I think perfect for tiling.

What you see in my pic is a pattern of 6X24 and 12X24. Other than the "large" tiles, I did most everything else I could to make it easy on myself. The 12X24 were harder to level and I feel like I spent more time on them. On the other hand, they cover twice the area. I know I have some high / low corners, but it is not bad. The worst thing about doing it myself for me was I spent months looking at tile floors afterward realizing a lot of professionals weren't doing a much better job.

That looks great.....still. I decided on tile. Now I have to find the tile. I know I will do rectified tile and tightish joint. I am thinking 12x24 or 24x24.

What are yours? 12x24? That color is perfect and basically what I would like to do. Where did you get yours and how much were they psf?

I believe you want the PEI 5 rating, strongest tile made. I am told that 12x12 is the easiest to lay as it does not show "lipping" as easily as the larger tiles for a garage floor. I am using a PEI 5 in 12x12 for may 3-car.
