I'd like to enclose my porch ceiling. As you can see from the pic, there's no sheathing just metal on purlins. I'm assuming ventilation is critical, a friend suggested using vinyl soffit material. Anybody here done something similar? There's a lot of porch to do, so cost is a factor but I'd like it to look nice. TIAd5f8cf17bedb8aa600824a0f41a5f24d.jpg

You can use plywood Bead Board, looks great and is easy to do. May need some additional blocking depending on thickness of plywood you choose. I did it to cover up a poor drywall ceiling in our patio.

Venting isn’t usually a concern on porches. I’d save up and do t&g beadboard. The real stuff.

I like T&G wood, but I'm concerned about condensation on the back side of the roof metal. I've yet to see any condensation, but once it's enclosed would it be a problem?

Burmashave,

You don’t provide a location under name, but would insulation help with the heat prior to the ceiling install? Several members have used metal in the garage which I should have installed When I completed my small porch covering my man door to my garage.

It comes like siding and is sold in the same aisle as gutters in HD. I did a quick search and couldn’t find it on their site. It’s much easier to work with by yourself.

I second what oldmxracer said. I did a mixture of solid and vented vinyl. PVC boards cover up the header.

Perforated vinyl soffit. It's so easy, looks nice, no worry about causing a condensation problem, lasts for ever. It's available in quite a few colors if you go to a supplier rather than HD or L.

Doing T&G or bead, or any representation of would compete with the siding- I'd keep to something smooth...
And you can cover seams/joints with lattice.

With a wood and shingle roof no. I’m not sure what would happen with a metal roof like that. Theoretically nothing should happen as it’s all the same temperature.

I used aluminium soffit material with vented sheets spaced out but can't remember spacing. It looks good to me but if you think you could hit it use vinyl because it aluminium will dent ( no issue for me though)

If the house is vented properly, You would need some vented soffit just as You did, the header boards, I just wrap in coil stock, quicker less $$ and never paint again !
