Porch Light outside Fixture

I’m assuming this is a kluge, so I want to re-do it right. For obvious reason

Proper way to mount through vinyl siding?

Get a wall mount for vinyl siding. It will give you a location for the pancake box and a flat wall spot to mount the light. The siding will tuck into the J channel so as to give a finished edge that will resist rain.

Or you can get the surface mount ones that follow the contours of the existing siding.
