I have a propane torpedo heater in my garage. I fun it about 20 minutes to heat the garage and then run it about 5 minutes every 20 minutes. Since this is not a heater that is vented to the outdoors, is this really dangerous?

no.but to be safe install a CO detector

If have you a window you can open a little or setup a door to be open slightly that would let a little fresh air in it will help to flip the air over.

Lots of propane stuff like floor buffers and forklifts are made to run inside. Install a CO detector and go for it.

What I can tell you; I ran a 100 pound tank with an 15k BTU Infrared Heater all last week during the Sub Zero weather, on my days off I ran a Kerosene Torpedo heater to get it above 45 degrees F. There was an inch of frost on the doors and windows showing all the air leaks. When the weather warmed up on the past weekend, I switched over to electric heat and running a dehumidifier 24hrs a day. It showed over 80% for 2 days, then it dropped to 70% for 2 more days, this morning it was down to 55%.
So yes running the dehumidifier while running any non-vented heat will make a difference.

I keep reading that propane stuff is fine for indoors but I can't stand it. Gives me a headache.
I have a small 1 ton propane forklift and I wont run that thing for more than a minute or 2 without the doors open, this is a 75x35 shop with 12 ft ceiling. I also have one of those small propane torpedo heaters my father gave me. I have used it once and a friend used it once when he was over working on a motorcycle. Since then I haven't touched it. The smell just bothers me, and I work in machine shop all day with various solvents.

None vented propane heater put a LOT of moisture in the air. That is just the way it is.

Non-vented combustion of any sort will make a ton of water. You don’t see it in the discharge of a torpedo heater because of the output temp, but it certainly is in there.
Paint will yellow from running a unvented heaters, stuff will rust. It isn’t good to be inhaling combustion byproducts either.
As a short term solution, sure. But I would quickly be looking for another source of heat.
