Has anyone here had any hands on experience with the portable A/C units on the market today? Looking to add one to my shop and would like to get some feedback beforeI jump.

I use one for spot and early season cooling in my shop. For these uses they are OK.

You need to keep in mind that these units are constantly exhausting conditioned air during their operation. This means that if you needed a 12,000 btu window unit, you will need a 15,000 btu portable unit because it has to cool the air that leaks in to replace the air it exhausts. (don't know the real capacity difference just used 12,000 and 15,000 to make a point)

I have used these units many years, prior to retiring, and they worked great. We called them "move and cool", or "spot cool units" , and used them for emergency situations in comercial building computer rooms. You need to run a flexible exaust duct, to either the outside, or in my cases, in the ceiling return air system. Also, there is a condensate bucket, that can either be emptied when full, or also run to a drain line. If this is going in your garage, and you are all sheet rocked in, I see no reason why you could not dump the warm condensing air up above the ceiling.

Your gonna lose space in your shop and as wayne stated great for emergency use is server rooms. Can get them from our local Trane rep. I don't think you wanna keep emptying that condensate pan!!

Have you considered a ductless split? The newer 410A unit's are the way to go and if you need to heat and cool there are heatpump option's. Won't take up shop space:beer: make room for the beer cooler!

We have some for emergency cooling in our data center. I personally think they are pretty wimpy for the price. Not anywhere near what a dedicated decent window unit can do. I would not have one, personally. If I had to pick between paying for one of those or a whole house attic type fan for the shop, I'd pick the fan.
