portable building paint booth

hello, I have been lurking around garage journal for a while now and finally signed up to get some advise... Im looking to build a basic automotive paint booth for hobby use. The size will be 24'x14' and will be made portable as when I move i would like to be able to move it with me. The main needs will for it to be able to store a 1000-1500 lb vehicle whe not being used as a booth.. The heavyest car i would ever have in it would be no more than 4500lb and would only be for a short period of time while spraying. Im not sure on how the floor construction will be as of now but here are my ideas.... 2x12" joist 12" on center... 2 layers of 3/4 plywood. Wood floor is the only way I can think to make it portable. Any help would be great.

I will also need to plan out a ventilation/heat system... If i could find a good used electric furnace. I think 16 48" florecent lights would be my goal also.

The floor and floor supports are my main concern though.

The way you are talking this "Portable booth" is going to be heavy as hell. You must be thinking of taking it apart if you move it?

If you really want portable, you could use one of those portable garages, rig up a strong vent and filter system and wet down the ground before painting. That's what I do.

I run 4 26" box fans with furnace filters so the neighbors don't complain about the fumes.

Good Luck making it portable with that heavy floor your talking about.

What i picture in my head is a "portable storage shed" like building that is built on skids... We have a parts shed at work that is 24x16 that is built on skids... We needed to move it about 50 yards and turn it around... So we had a rollback wrecker truck winch it onto his truck anedd set it back down were we needed it... If i could have it moved with a rollback wrecker when i move that would be great.

:shocking: electric furnace would not be a good idea and those lights need to be explosion proof :shocking:
most paint booths use gas heaters or infared lights

Cheapest way would be one of those northern enclosed car ports, a few regular home cheapo floursent $9.99 lights with a wooden box and plexi sealed built around them. and a fire evacuation fan like this.... http://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa=Main.Item&itemid=4&acctid=4273 these are made for hazard areas. or build a squirel cage fan from and old forced air heating cabinet and put the box out side the tent and keep the elec motor out side the fume area. how much do you plan to spray?

I just reread your post your also looking for storage got ya how about an old enclosed car trailer or office trailer, dont know where you live but a trailer of sorts is legal with registering it, as where a building is not. good luck.

Mobile home? Strengthen the floor a bit. As it's off the ground you could vent fumes etc out the bottom and as it's on wheels you can move it with you. Already set up for lights and water etc.

I have access to 3 paint booths at work so if I need to paint something big i can you one of them... Mainly it will be storage for my Locost but would like it to be a usable paint room. I know nothing about HVAC units so if anyone has some tips on the ventilation that would be great.

can you explain why the electric furnace wouldnt be a good idea... Im not doubting you at all, just un-knowledgable about that type of unit.

Thanks

We have a couple 10x20 conex boxes (shipping containers) at work that weigh in around 15,000 lbs that we use as portable work shops for ship repair. They are routinely moved from the shop to the area shipyards on a rollback wrecker. Shouldn't be a big deal to move the shed you are looking to build. Just figure out how to beef up the frame of the building to hold up to being yanked around on a truck.

I built a 24x20 with a wooden floor and have a lift and car in it. I also did 2x6s 12" on center and doubled up the 3/4" decking for 1.5". As another poster mentioned. THAT SUCKER IS HEAVY! It is built on skids so it could be moved but for the money, I'd just sell it with the house and build another wherever my new residence was.

The design if more that strong enough to hold what you want it to. Moving something like that is a whole different issue.

Doug, you've got a nice shop and back yard... I wouldnt move it either if i had that setup. Mine will be in an open area with easy access for a rollback or trailer.. If i make it as useable and well built as i plan, i will take it everywhere i move ( which wont be much). i spent a good part of last night looking around at plans and diy paint booths and have a pretty good idea of what i want to do... Now just covince the boss.. Lol

we got some shed at the shipyard, they are basic angle iron frame with tin screwed to them. they are so light weight the wind can blow them around. but they are bigger enough you have plenty of room walk around the car
