Ok everyone, I'm currently using a 10' X 15' portable building for my makeshift shop right now. I'd like to put in some lighting. Obviously, I'll be running an extension cord for power to the house as the building is about 20' to 30' away from an outlet. I'm thinking of 3 or 4 48" fluorescent fixtures. I'm just wondering what you guys think I should do as far as number of fixtures, how to get power to them, any other thoughts, etc. Thanks in advance!

you can use just 4 48" fixtures with 2 bulbs each.

as for power. if you are just running a single extension cord to building for temp use please make sure it is a min #12 wire size and you are on a semi non used circuit in the house.

see attached image. install box for splice, install light switch, install receptacle if you will need one. run wire from light to switch, from switch to splice box. run wire from receptacle thru splice box and leave pigtail. install 3 prong at end of pigtail. splice lighting circuit to power circuit in splice box. use plastic wing wire connections with electrical tape over open ends. plug your extension cord end to new 3 prong.

this should get you going. $10 plus wiring and extension cord

I'd go to Lowe's and get two Tandem T-8 fixtures, $39.95 each and 6500K bulbs and some sunglasses if it's too bright.
