I have an old generac 4000xl and live in Northern California, see where this is going? In yet another shutoff currently. I run the fridge, TV and microwave.

A 2000W inverter generator would handle that load. The inverter generators are quiet and sip fuel.

I would get a power inlet installed and run it to breaker on my main load center with a generator interlock.

It used to be the occasional outage due to storms or snow but that really didn't happen for years. Poor generator has been getting a workout lately with 24+ hour shutoffs. Lights I just use battery powered led camping lights that last 40 hours or the old standby lanterns. It had been probably 7 years since the generator had been started, fired right up on the second pull.

Where do you live?

Homedepot is having a sale on the little 800w sportsman inverter generator again. $219. You will be hard pressed to find a generator that burns less fuel. Im clocking over 8hrs on 0.55gal of fuel. It will also run my 5cuft chest frezer.

Be careful of theft of running generators while you are sleeping. I read on another forum with rednecks where they push a lawnmower up to your running generator and start it up. They turn your generator off and wheel it away and if you are half asleep, you hear the lawnmower running and think it’s all good.

That's way more too much trouble for most rednecks I know...
Besides, most of us on this forum know what out-of-sync motors sound like.. :)

Too bad I don't have one, this generac has been good to me for 20+ years. No neighbors to worry about either, they all burned down a year ago.

We(our company) lost quite a few during hurricane Andrew.
Our line truck was held up at gunpoint for gas cans and a portable generator.
Our WTO had a gun in his boot, but common sense told him,let them have it.
Even lost a newly installed belly tank one at a nursing home.Low Boy rollback wrecker came and got it. Snatched wires and all.
Another large semi trailer mounted one at a remote Telco building was snatched while running.
they used an axe to cut the 500MCM cabling.Genset must have shut down when the ATS signal was lost.

How the hell do you resell a genset that size?

Must have scored them a boulder sized meth rock for their troubles.
