Portable sandblaster... controlling mess.

So I bought a little portable sand blasting gun to blast a few parts on my jeep as prep for welding. But I can not believe the mess it makes.

Is there a good way to contain the mess a little bit? Or a media that won't bother my grass at least? I have copper slag media right now, works damn good.

When I had a small item that wouldn't fit into the cabinet, I

modified a cardboard box and used a blanket to help keep the mess

to a minimum. Depending on how much time it took, there was

always a bit of a spill, but not like blasting in the open air. You

might try using walnut shell. It is bio frendly to leave on the ground,

and very sharp so it cuts well. I also tried beach sand (not mason

sand) and it works very well, is extreamly cheap if you live near the

shore (like I do) but can cause rusting due to salt content.

I have used a couple of tarps with one being on the ground and the other draped over a ******* rope like a tent over the ground tarp. I take a box fan and use it to clear dust as I spray but it contains about 80-90% of it which makes it easy to clean up or reuse.

Of course here in Texas it is usually hot as hell so you can drop about 8lbs of water weight like a sauna while your at it!

Are you working indoors or outside?

When I have something that won't fit in my cabinet I just take it out in the middle of the driveway and have at it. When I'm done I sweep up the media, sift it and return it to the bin.

I don't know of any media that will harm the lawn, if going out in yard works for you.

Walnut might be a great choice, I looked at it, but didn't think it would be very abrasive.

I am blasting parts of my jeep frame, I drive it onto the driveway and spray, I have been using moving blankets and cardboard, but that stuff gets everywhere still.

Be creative, try using clear plastic bags taped in place. This will help keep the media from blowing all over and easy to reuse again. This is especially useful when you don't wish to remove the particular part from the car. I've also made a cheap temporary wooden frame covered in plastic for bigger pieces that I can't fit into the blast cabinet.

I made a 3 sided box with a top, a blue tarp for the bottom and blast away. Its still messy but somewhat contained. I love the results but hate blasting.

I always use cheap light brown color sand. The stuff labeled "not for blasting."

The lawyers have them put it there, bust most buyers use it for that I'm pretty sure, because it comes graded.

Maybe graded for a sandbox, ya sure.

WTF its just plain sand. So let it go anywhere unless you do it 24/7 then you meed a bobcat.

This sand sciliosis is so BS. I lived on the coast of TX, and daughter lives in windstorm are AZ.

Im not saying it's good, but compared to the ambient every day every person living in those sandstorm area dosages is a joke,
NOBODY ever talks about the inhalation of that, Silly stuff.

Let it run out into the yard. No effevt on gradd lessn your talking a hundred bags.
