What do you recommend in tool boxes that 1 person can lift and put on the back of a pickup truck? I want to put a nail bag, claw hammer, speed square, and other tools inside the box. I would like something weatherproof. I don't really want drawers. I have not seen a real recent thread on this topic.

I used to like a crossover type tool box bolted behind my cab when I was doing carpentry. I kept my daily tools right in my work bag. There was a lot of room for all sorts of whatever else I decided to carry plus it was several inches off the truck bed so I could still haul 4X8's. There was sliding trays in mine for organization. I also kept a small toolbox for organization rather than stuff rattling around in the crossover. I could also carry that to the work if needed.

Expirement with what you have available. Spy on your co-workers for ideas. These things morph with time and experience.

For my portable carpentry/handyman/non-auto rig, I bought into the RIDGID 22" PROFESSIONAL TOOLBOX line and absolutely love it.

It has 4 components (mix&match at will)

"Pro Organizer" $29
"Pro Tool Box" $39
"Pro Gear Cart $59

There's also a crate $19 (no lid, mesh walls, good for extension cords, tie-downs, etc) that integrates (stacks & locks) into the system.

What I like:

I can load them into my pickup one at a time (by myself) with ease. All together would be a different story

The boxes are stout enough that I (180lb) can stand on them all day no problem.

The plastic is very tough, flexible enough that I'd be shocked at this point to see any of the boxes crack, thick, tough, & durable.

They utilize a full size O-ring that seals nicely when latched making them dust and rain-proof. I wouldn't say they're water proof like a pelican box, but as long as you're not pulling them behind a boat, you'll be fine.

They stack & lock together nicely - quick lock-unlock via two bars on either side that engage with thick plastic tabs molded into the box. Never had them come apart in transit, whether rolling around or in the back of my pickup.

I put my entire Occidental rig (~4" belt + 2 full size bags + hammer holder) in the bottom (wheeled) box without having to take the bags off the belt. Just drop them in and put the lid on. Doing it this way, the bags remain upright and I can access any of the tools that are in my bags without having to remove my belt & bags (except for the hammer)

Middle box I use for additional tools that I don't carry in my bags (clamps, panel saw, bit box, 12V drill & driver, etc)

That's what I got. That's what I recommend. I know Milwaukee, DeWalt, Bosch, and everybody else under the sun has come out with a similar platform in recent years, but I haven't had any negative experience with the Ridgid system.
