Porter Cable 140R Router?

I was at an estate sale yesterday, and picked up a LOT of equipment and tooling for a very good price. Among it all was this Porter Cable 140R router. It works perfectly. And I've never even seen or heard of a router designed like this one before. Was it meant to be used in a very specific type of application? It's just so different in design from the standard plunge type routers that are everywhere that it has me scratching my head a little. I've done an online search and came up with very little. Does someone here have some insight?

Thanks for the insight RTM and yatg. I also have that miniature steel table. I had no idea Porter Cable offered anything like this. For model building it should be quite useful.

Routers with side handles like that were somewhat standard in Europe at one point.
Elu made one. The model 713 I Think. (Elu basically invented the modern plunge router, and were later bought out by Black & Decker).
Festool also made a similar router and still does.
Rupes of Italy still has a similar router in their product line. The RP84.
The Festool and Rupes both seem to use motors similar to ones also used for sanders, so it’s likely that it was just an extra tool that could be made and sold using an already produced motor,.
