Porter Cable 1410 dry cut chop saw guard spring?

I recently acquired a Porter Cable chop saw, model 1410, which appears to be an older version compared to what's out there today. The only problem I've found with it is the mechanism for the guards to open does not work as a result of a broken spring.

I removed the broken spring so I could start looking for a replacement, the hooked end was attached to the screw I'm holding it up to in one of the photos.

Can anyone shed some light on how these guards are supposed to work and where the other end of the spring attaches to? Photos below.

Thanks,

Hans

Sometimes you can form a new hook on the end of the spring and reconnect it with needle nose pliers. Work slowly with it and it usually can be done.

Thanks everyone. It makes more sense now that I see the small hole on the left and realize it connects to that end!

I realized now there was another lever that came with the saw that wasn't attached, and looking closer at it has the end of the broken spring attached to, but I'm having trouble envisioning how all of this goes together , as I believe it is supposed to open up as the saw is lowered.

If anyone has a 1410 and could take some photos of how it all goes together I'd appreciate it as the diagram isn't very clear.

Don,

That is extremely helpful. I tried to reply yesterday that I had figured it out but I must have been logged out and it didn't take. Anyways once I realized that the lever got connected to the base (in your 3rd photo) it all came together how it worked. I had to make a collar for the screw that goes into the large guard so that it would fit properly, but I managed.

I have to give it a good jerk to get it to open, but other than that it's working great.

Thanks again!

Glad to help.

I lucked out finding mine lightly used on FB forums for cheap a few months back so I haven't had much use of it yet.

But I installed a new Diablo Cermet blade and the cuts are very clean so far.

This was the first, and one of the best, drycut saws available. I have one and lament the fact that if it ever shits the bed that I'll not be able to replace it with another. This was Porter-Cable when Porter-Cable was at the top of the food chain. Not the pathetic brand SBD turned it into.
