I am looking at a Porter CAble 3 tool compressor set that is marked down at my local Home Depot at 239.99 down from $259 and high as $299 at times. Is this a good deal and will this be an asst at my garage as a home owner model.

Also will this provide enough air to run a ratchet and impact wrench? Home owner use only

This is the closet I could find on the website

I don't think a little 6 gallon is going to run an impact or air ratchet.

I have a PC pancake compressor with framing gun, trim gun, brad nailer and stapler. It's worked great for me as a homeowner renovating rooms in an old house. Absolutely no problems whatsoever.

take a look at the Bostitch combo Kit. I have had both and now have the Bostitch. Guns are about the same but the compressor is much nicer.

I have the same P/C set. Yep, the compressor is noisy. The air line is kinda inflexible. The guns are good. Be sure to oil them, they will last a long time. Wondered why I beat trim/finish nails for so long before buying.

Probably this combo.

18 gauge brad, 16 gauge finish and 18 gauge 1/4 in. staples.

Bostitch is definitely the gold standard for nailers. I would want a stick nailer in my set if I were shopping.

Yes, it will run a 1/2" impact or a ratchet. Both of those are intermittent use and that little compressor should be able to keep up. Forget any other air tools except a blow gun or tire chuck.

This Bostitch set does not have a stapler, but you can use the money you save to buy some good rubber hose (that won't kink), couplers, a blow gun, tire chuck and start shopping for an impact. I can't believe I'm going to say this but, check out Harbor Freight for those accessories.

Someday you will want a stick nailer.

i have one of the porter cable combos, also from HD
works fine for DIY stuff, the included hose kinda ***** for flexibility.

i have used it with an impact, it's not ideal, but it will work.

An alternate reality in a parallel universe.
If you have a Lowes go there and get the Hitachi combo deal, but the compressor and one tool get 20% off combo, add another tool get 30% off combo, get a third tool get 40% off. I have over twenty nailers and the Hitachi stuff is consistently better than Bostitch. The pieces that are better are my Paslode PF350S PowerFramer and my Grex or Cadex pin nailers.

Unless you only do framing, or roofing, you will regret your choice of

machines. If you are going to use it in a garage setting, working on

cars and such, then save your $$ to get a (minimum 20 gal) machine

with a compressor that has oil in its' crankcase and a rating of around

4 to 7 cfm @ 90 psi (minimum). With air systems, it is all about volumn,

not pressure. Even the little emergency roadside compressors will put

out 100 psi, but it takes forever to blow up a tire. Start searching

the forum for "Help I've fallen down and need an air compressor" (HA !)

b/c there is tons of information on the subject. If price is a consider-

ation, then start thinking in terms of a used machine. They are available

on CL, E-bay, the local "Trader" publications, and other such stuff-for-sale

services. Places for new machines include Harbor Freight, Northern

tool, Home Depot, Lowes, Tractor Supply, Sears, Grainger and the like.

The popular opinion around the forum seems to be that the older bigger

used machines are worth buying at a bargain, and then doing what ever

is necessary to keep them running. You will find a lot of posts in that

respect here too. As for me, I have two large compressors, one I made

using a very old walk-in freezer compressor that I have never been able

to identify, or get parts for, it has a leather seal on the crankshaft that is

leaking oil, and another American Brake Co compressor that I found being

thrown out at curbside. It turned out to be a Kellog compressor, and I

got new valves and gaskets to resurect it. Both systems still work almost

as good as the day they were new. I'd opt for used anytime over what

you could get new these days, which is mostly from China. Hope that

this gives you something to think about...

My FIL has that same PC set. If you are dead set on PC, make sure you get the 150PSI pancake instead of the 135PSI. My HD still has both in stock. I do like my Bostitch pancake, don't get me wrong. Just never felt their nailers were that much better than any other pro stuff.

If you're ok with consumer, arguably the best consumer nailers, PC will do just fine. I genuinely like PC nailers, though I do think they should be priced a little more consistently with their real value. If you want something better, Hitachi is where I would look, specifically the Lowe's deal that was mentioned.

Let's look at just the compressors you could get in that price range, all 6 gal oilless pancakes (let's ignore the nailers for a moment)

Hitachi 145 PSI, claims 2 cfm @ 90, 2 cfm @40 $189 (before the % off)
PC 150 PSI, claims 2.6 cfm @ 90 $299
Bostitch 150 PSI, claims 2.8 cfm @ 90 $199

The best deal overall if you need more than 1 finish nailer becomes the Hitachi the more you add, but if you only need a brad nailer or brad plus one more, based on the compressor I would get the Bostitch.
