Hey guys,

So...I've got a Porter Cable bench top Disk/Belt Sander in my garage that gets a lot of use.

For years, I had no problem keeping the adhesive backed disks on the thing. I must have gotten a shipment of disks with inferior glue or something, as I've managed to launch the last 2 disks I tried to put on there. The first one scratched the hood of my wife's car that was parked nearby. Luckily the one I launched last night didn't hit anything valuable but it did nail me right in the ear (only bled a little bit).

I had the platen totally pristine before I mounted this thing. Completely clean and then roughed it up a with some 80 grit to give the new disk some bite, the carefully put it on there....and it still flew off.

Anyone have any ideas here? Extra glue? Some way to switch to hook and loop on these 8-inch disks? Helm of Protection from Flying Sandpaper?

I'm not putting a disk back on this thing until I come up with a better way to keep it attached.

I would think roughing the surface would be a bad thing. Most surfaces are rather smooth. Also you might want to just get a differant brand at this juncture .

Yes the shop is heated. I'll have to look at the disks for the brand. I'm pretty sure I bought them at lowes. That's where I bought the sander.

As a kid my father used crazy glue which works fairly well, but I like 3m spray 77 or the like. Clean the backer pad well with a scraper or razor blade, then spray both the pad and the paper apply pressure or a little weight and let it cure. It the most foolproof method I have found and I do that with all PS paper regardless of the quality of the paper. I prefer hook and loop but it not always the best option...

You shouldn't have roughed the plate up.

With that said, unless you went crazy removing material, the disks should still stick. Are they extremely old? Been sitting somewhere cold and killed the adhesive? Gotten wet?

Try warming the glue up with a heat gun for a minute before you stick it on, sometimes this helps if the discs are old. I have even heated discs in the microwave in a pinch and it worked.

We used to use spray on contact adhesive so the edges wouldn't curl up on ours at work
Seemed to do the trick

did you clean the surface of all contaminants? try using alcohol or a solvent and thoroughly wipe it down.

I got the same sander from lowes, its a good deal for the price and has worked well for me with lots of power. I think I stalled it only once when a piece of wood got jammed in between the table and the belt, sacred the bejesus out of me.
