Porter Cable vs Dewalt Bench Grinder

I'll make a long story short. I have some Lowes gift cards that I need to spend, and I want a bench grinder for general purposes. I am not a mechanic, so it will not be heavily used, mostly for lawn mower blades, for polishing and cleaning (I plan to get a a cotton wheel and wire wheel as well), and for general purpose grinding.

I see that Lowe's most expensive grinders come down to the Porter Cable and the Dewalt. The Porter Cable, though a less expensive brand, has a multi-speed function and a light... while the Dewalt only has a single speed and no light... both are the same price, essentially.

Which one should I go with? I think the Porter Cable, since it has multiple speeds I can lower the speed down for use with a cotton polish wheel... but I don't know if that matters much because I've never owned a grinder! :dunno:

IMHO, I've fondled that PC in the store, it is a real POS. The dewalts are pretty nice for the money. Have you checked the used route? :dunno:

I'd try to find an older USA made craftsman block grinder or the like. You will be money and quality ahead.

I would love to, but around here, grinders that come up for sale, used, are either **** brands, or **** pricing. Besides, I really do have some gift cards that I need to spend!

I noticed that most of the tools my dad modified in his life time of being a mechanic were almost always Snap On. When I asked him why, he said a cheaper tool, might not have the strength to do the job. Ken.

OP . . . do you have mail service . . . . or does UPS deliver to your house??

Week or two ago there was nice Craftsman block grinder that came up on CL and I think a fellow GJer convinced the seller to ship the grinder !!

Any $40 or $50 vintage Cman 1/2 HP block grinder will be better than anything you'll be buying at Lowes or HD for double or triple the money.

I thought this thread had died... and somehow, a revival!

What side of Louisville are you on?

I am in the Highlands/Hikes Lane area... why do you ask?

I definitely have mail service, not a business address, though I'm not sure that matters. I've been hounding the Louisville / Bowling Green / Lexington / East Kentucky / Cincinatti area craigslists, as I have family in all those areas who would be more than willing to drop by and pick something up for me.

from what I've read the Dewalt doesn't have very good reviews...

I saw that too. Both of them do not have very good reviews. I was mainly narrowing it down to those 2, because I have the gift cards and at the same time have been wanting a grinder / polish wheel.

Unless you are going to use the grinder very seldom and lightly, I doubt you'll find any good grinder at HD or Lowe's or etc. My airplane mechanic friend has a Craftsman about 25 yr. old that he swears by, but I've also heard negative things about the newer Craftsmans. So, what the heck, I don't know.

I'd think either would be fine for your stated purpose.. PC and DeWalt are both Black&Decker owned last I checked and possibly share some components anyway?

I have Porter Cable cordless power tools and have been plenty happy with them for homeowner use.
