I bought an air hose reel from lowes just over a year ago for $100. Seemed decent enough and worked great at first. However now the damn thing wont fully recoil the hose. Is the spring in these that weak, or is the cheap *** hose that comes with them just get too stiff? Got any suggestions to fix it?

I'm only using it for home owner stuff / inflating the kids bike tires, etc. so it only gets used a hand full of times a week. So cant justify spending 3+ bills for a pro grade USA made one. So would like to either get this one working again or buy another one for $100 or so that will actually work and last.

Just FYI, my Chinese, $50, harbor freight air hose reel with the original 50 foot hose is going strong after 10 years.

The HF reel has been great to me for about four years now. If you decide to try another, it's definitely worth a shot.

I haven't seen the reel you have, but if you can partially disassemble it, you can likely get a little more pretension on the spring. Just pull it out 10-15 past where it stops retracting, then manually wind it back up on the reel.

I personally don't rate reels, top quality hose and fittings and learn coil your hose and have a wall hook .

This is why I have a manual hose reel with 100' of Flexzilla on it. I often need to unspool it all the way and it only takes a few seconds to roll it all up.

It could be that the hose is bunching up. Completely pull out the hose and when feeding it back in guide it back and forth to evenly distribute it on the reel. Look inside to see if hose is even on the reel.

Pull the hose all the way out and clean the whole length of it. A little bit of build up can make a huge difference in a reel. As far as recommendations I have had good luck with my craftsman reel, still doesn’t like to go all the way in when it is cold though.

I hung hoses for a long time, finally got reels. There is something about the discipline it brings to it for some reason. Just because it's psychological doesn't mean it's not real. Not quite so bad with 25 but longer ones seem to find the floor and stay there.

Same here. HF over 10 years old with original hose. not the original hose end though.
I also have a Lincoln reel with a god awful huge 1/2" hose on it that won't retract worth a damn, even with the tension maxed. I do believe a more normal sized 1/2" hose would help it a lot. I paid a good bit more for the lincoln with the 1/2" hose and it was still a made in china reel that was lower quality than HF.
