Just took back a 10' C'man adjustable wrench this morning that the thumbwheel had been locked-upon. Got a new one from the counter and carried it up to the register. The young lady behind the counter didn't even try the wrench or ask what was wrong with the one I brought in. She cheerfully scanned the new one, put it in a bag along with a receipt and thanked me for my business. If I hadn't stopped to look around, I'd have been in and out in <2 minutes for this transaction.

I can't imagine how this could have been any more hassle-free.

Thougth I should give Sears their props.

Wow! Never have I seen a Ten Foot Adjustable Wrench!!! Thing must be HUGE! J/K man... ' = Feet and " = Inches

Here is a 48" Pipe Wrench but that is all I could find. Too bad there is nothing to compare it to for size though...

I love it when they don't hassle you at all. I don't like that they won't give you the Ratchet Rebuild Kits anymore. They actually take your Ratchet and give you a different one. Last time I went in to do this I was like "No way do you get my Ratchet that I have used for many years!". The Ratchet Policy used to be better than it is now.

I took in a wrench the was purposely bent (home made distributor wrench), the guy said he couldn't return it because it was intentionally done. I put it in a vice straightened it out, it actually broke then, took it in broken but straight and got a new one.

Did you expect them to warranty it when it was clearly bent on purpose?:lol_hitti

I have gotten some things warrantied at OSH (west coast hardware chain that carries craftsman) and it was super easy.

I broke a allen T handle, the kind with the ball end. The ball snapped off, so i brought the whole set into the store (they dont seem to replace single things anymore if they are part of a set). I handed him all of my greasy beat up T handles, and he grabbed a brand new set for me. Best part is that I bought the original set at a flea market for 10 bucks, and they cost 40 in the store!!

Depends on who is working, I have taken in some things that didn't even resemble a tool anymore, most customer service workers don't know anything about their products....I worked at autozone when I was in college and my store manager couldn't change a tire if she tried.

I had a bent wrench that i took back and i made the mistake of going to the checkout with the old guy who knew tools (instead of the high school kid who wouldn't have looked twice at it). Knowing they won't take back "modified" tools, I bent it back to straight but the "heat line" was still on the wrench.

Old guy looked at the wrench and said, you bent this on purpose, I can't exchange it for you. And I said, "Yeah, it's bent but that's not why I'm returning it. I'm returning it because the ring end broke (open end was bent). He said, Ahhh, OK then, I'll exchange it for you then.

I've taken back screwdrivers were I've reground the tip. If they ask, I tell them what happened: the tip broke and I reground it to keep using the tool so I wouldn't have to return as many as often. The smart ones get it. The dumb ones don't even look at the tool...

When I bought the big cabinet on Sunday, I was waited on by the regular guy I've bought with before. We were there before 6 so I asked if the cab was still on sale after 6. He said "Sure, you don't have to wait, I'll ring it up with the extra 10% right now." Done and done.

I did get a 3/8 drive 15mm chrome deepwell replaced once and no questions asked.I broke this socket with a 1/2 drive impact wrench and never asked me this.I bought a set of chrome metric swivel sockets and the 13mm was defective. The 13mm socket side had the drive side on it instead and got this replaced with no questions asked.Sales person saw this too.Get this most of the time when getting ratchets replaced: we can give you a refurbished ratchet instead.Tell the sales person no and want a new ratchet instead.

I have had virtually no issues with C'man warrantying anything I have brought in. Their warranty says something like, "if you C'man tool ever fails to give complete satisfaction...blah blah blah..."

Snap-On guy, however, refused to replace one of my flat-blade screwdrivers because "it came over on the Mayflower - it's too old". The black handle broke - it twisted into two parts. somehow, since this was manufactured back when I first got out of High School (Mayflower era), that means it isn't covered... I called the 800 number; they are taking care of it.

Strange how Snap-On charges four times as much as C'man, but gives me a harder time. (I know MrShaun & Chad don't do this - but there is a lot of inconsistencies amongst Snappy drivers)

Great service from that dealer... jeesh...

I would have thrown it through the sears window.

Really though keep calling people if you annoy them enough you will get something

A call everyday for a year will get you something.

Is it still under warranty?

What will you buy now, if not CRAFTSMAN?

ok...this is what makes warrenties like what sears have disappear...it's like the guys who buy broken craftsman for the flea market and then go straight to sears to demand new ones.......abuse in my opinion

I disagree. From what I can tell, the poster is the one that broke the tool and it was fine when he bought it. In that case, I have to say the tool should be replaced, no matter who bought it. Now the people that scavenge junk yards and rusted out cars and equipment for Craftsman to exchange and sell, sicken me...

edit*
Just had to add, I wouldn't be surprised to see in the future something where you have to show a receipt that you bought a tool to warranty it. It's a shame because I love the fact that all of my grandpa's and my dad's tools that I have some of, are guaranteed forever.

Yeah, that's horrible.
Just think about what would happen if the flea market guys with the broken Craftsman tools got new ones and then sold those at the flea market!

i bought the tools a while ago at the flea market, and broke it recently. Who cares who the original buyer of the tool was. I think the ball end allens are weak in their design anyways. They are thinner right where the ball starts.

Did you offer to buy a rebuild kit for something you mucked up? Don't even know if Sears sells a rebuild kit, but did you even offer to buy one? Hopefully you're habits become more honest before you get to the workplace.

Impressive (heavy sarcasm)... Will you also be complaining in the forum about the ever growing portion of Craftsman's tools which are manufactured off shore? Or can I look in your previous posts?

I've no respect for warranty abuse. You're all old enough, and experienced enough, to know better. Unfortunately, Sears sales staff are often not.

I have had good luck with them warrantying stuff, finding someone who knows what they are talking about is a different question. Also, I have asked several employees why I am a member of the craftsman club and none can give me a good reason ( I know im a member because i joined, they cant answer why that is beneficial to me)

Craftsman warrantied the tool. They built the warranty into the price of the tool. The warranty belongs to the TOOL, not to the OWNER. So, it should not really matter where the tool came from - the broken tool will be replaced. If the current owner isn't wise enough to claim the warranty, then if you buy it broken the warranty still applies. Somebody somewhere paid for the tool and at the same time paid the warranty cost. Sears doesn't care - if they did, the warranty would apply to the original purchaser only and a receipt would be required for the claim. It's not - So a "lifetime warranty" Craftsman tool carries that warranty where ever and to whomever it goes. As long as somebody originally bought the tool at Sears (that is - it's not stolen) then there's no cheating involved IMHO.

@ Falcon - Agree with [most] everything you said. It's abuse of tools which I'm taking an issue against.

nobodys going out of business because of some abused tools.

its not how much stuff a company gives away for free that hurts them, its how much stuff they dont sell that hurts them.

there would have to be billions upon billions of free tools given away to even make a dent in there losses

Lifetime warranties are great marketing; it gets you to come back to the the store... ostensibly, to buy MORE TOOLS! :) The lifetime warranty; is one of the reasons, if not THE REASON people buy tools at Sears!

I don't get the screw driver guarantee, I mean I understand that they are lifetime but I just cant see going in and swapping them for new ones. If a tip snaps off in the first week yes, in the 4th year, no. I like craftsman but I don't love craftsman. They do the job I need them to do for a good price and they are US made at the moment. I however will confess that when in the rare instance I have to put a pipe on a ratchet I reach for my craftsmans every time.

It was a hand me down, I don't give a f#ck about if craftsman goes over seas more than they already are...

Take a look at my previous posts all you want.

I took in a rusty wrench that was bent, no warranty, I straightened it out, got a warranty, I call this smart and saving a buck in the harsh times we live in. 90 percent of the time a tool breaks is because it was used improperly (cheater bars, 1/2-3/8 adapters, screwdrivers as prybars and punches, etc. etc.) It happens, I did it, I am not ashamed that I got a 5 dollar wrench warrantied because someone before me bent it.
If someone gave you a SN24C breaker bar and said they bent it using it as a pry bar, would you take it? No, never mind don't answer that.

EDIT: The only reason why I would gave a rats *** about craftsman staying here is to keep jobs here in America.
