So I'm looking through my local classifieds and I come across this ad for a drill press that needs a chuck and a bit of cleaning up. The owner says it works great and wants $25 for it. What do you guys think? Would it make a nice little project? Do you think it's worth fixing up?

No intermediate pulley and no table "elevator" are what would deter me. If you do go for it, pay special attention to the taper that the chuck mounts on. If badly scored or mangled.........keep on walking. $25 is OK if you are looking for a project, but why not spend another $25 and get one that needs no work?

Bottom line: He probably has the chuck, but is not showing it to you....cuz it won't stay on!!

I don't think it would be worth it to me but it is not one of the "classics". It honestly has little to show any value. There is no chuck and that alone is enough of a turn off for me.

Thanks guys, I think I'll pass on it and keep looking. I'm pretty much just looking for a project to start getting my hands dirty with. To be honest I'm trying to learn a bit more about mechanics and fixing things, I figure there's no better way than to pull something apart and try and fix it up. Thanks again.

Looks like your average China/Taiwan made press. Not worth the effort and cost to fix it up IMO.

They sell all day long for $50 new. I'd pay ten bucks for it and I don't even know why.

This. They are better than not having a DP but not by much. They are pretty portable though which can be useful, I had one like it but it now lives in my brothers shed. It can manage 3/8" in mild steel and you can drill 1/2" if you have already drilled a 1/4" hole but it struggles and is running to fast so you wouldn't want to use a expensive bit.
One like that doesn't need a table lift, the whole drill is probably only 60lb.

As stated above, that is not worth it. Even free isn't a very good price as you will have to find a chuck and key for it. Pay a few dollars more and get one that is in turnkey condition.
