There is a guy selling an oxyacetelyne setup with 2 big tanks, the hoses and torch setup with 2 tips for $200, is it worth it? He's not sure of the brand but he said I could try it out. What do you guys think?

If the tanks are: big enough, owned and not leased, and not in need of hydrotesting, and the rest of the equipment is one of the big 3, being: Victor, Harris, and Smith, it might be a good deal. See what he has, see if parts are still available, and search the internet. I will usually pull the trigger around 50% of the cheapest price available on retail pricing.

I purchased oxy / propane two weeks ago and one of the gauges were bad. I ordered Smith gauges for around $80. Still came out pretty good

Make sure you check if the tanks are owned or leased, if leased the value goes down substantially.

Check the valves on the torch and make sure they're not bent or tight, check the regulators and make sure they operate smoothly, if the torch is old check the gas lines for dry cracking.

It could be a great deal, a good deal, or too much money for what it is, you won't know until you see it. Victor, Harris, and Purox (Esab) all make good torches and I believe they can all be rebuilt, we had two of our older Purox torches rebuilt after probably 30 years and it cost about 1/3-1/2 the cost of a new torch.

Ditto on the tanks. If he says that he owns them, ask if he has the papers. You also need to see what brand of tanks they are and where you can get them filled. One brand of tank you may be able to get filled locally and the other might be 100 miles away.

Ditto again on those tanks.........be sure you can get them filled!! It is best to have a receipt from a company to establish the true origin of those tanks.........not just something scribbled down by your friend. You may have to prove that they are not stolen (sometime down the road).

I bought my tanks nearly thirty years ago and have used up five suppliers (bankruptcies) and have been asked a couple of times to verify the ownership of my tanks. Around here, the supplier maintains acetylene tanks, but the owner has the responsibility of keeping the oxygen certification up to date (every ten years). So if it is an exchange arrangement, try to get a newer date each time, to save on that expense.

Other than the tank issue it is probably a decent deal. Take a good look at them, if they look as though they may have been dragged behind a truck from Toronto to Miami, you may just want to keep looking.
