Friends,

I have a 30x40 post frame (pole barn style) shop with 6x6 posts every ten feet on the perimeter. The 6x6 posts are buried 3ft deep and have post protectors on them. The shop floor consists of 5” of 4500 PSI concrete with reinforcing fiber but no rebar. I live in Arkansas.

In one corner of the shop, I want to build a 10x10 loft (eight feet tall). I can use three of the existing 6x6 posts to support the loft, but I need to add one 6x6 posts for the corner of the loft not supported by the existing 6x6s along the outer two walls. The loft will be used for extra storage and will not have any heavy items.

Here’s the question - I don’t want to cut out any part of my existing slab as it’s in great condition. Do you think I can reasonably get away with mounting a 6x6 posts on the existing concrete slab?

Note that I’m only using a 6x6 post so it’ll match the existing 6x6 posts that I will build off of.

Thanks in advance!

yup no problem. i made a 4x30 foot loft with 2 posts in the middle .......so about 10 feet between them. use the floor bracket that keeps it anchored safely. notch this support 3 inches for a double layer of 2x. I used 2x6's. Make sure you use structural fasters at all posts. Don't cheap out on them.

I built a 12x36x8 loft using 4x4 post. I used 6 across the front with post holder bolted into the concrete. There are 2 other post bolted into the concrete about midway in the shore for the stairs. With that said I use this area for storage and nothing really heavy. I used joist hangers at 16 ft center and there are also four walls framed under it as well. The rear is tied into the building post as well. It’s very solid and I have not had any problems since I did it.

I like the ultra clean look so would probably drill a hole in bottom of post and mount a pin in concrete - drilled in or anchored on a plate. Just wood column and concrete floor, no fasteners or other hardware.

I have a 36 x 60 barn and put a loft in on corner. Well actually it is a room with ceiling for storage. It works very well, I have a place for storage above and a room I can keep warm down below as there is a remote chance barn will drop below 32 in my area. It also gave me area to keep things clean and extra wall space for shelving units. I simply built a stud wall with treated bottom 2x4.
