Can I dig my entire foundation/slab area out first, then go ahead and auger my holes the rest of the way down (inside the slab square), fill my holes up to level with my excavation, then do my base (gravel/etc), then my pour?

you can start your post frame construction as i did when i built my 36x24 garage in 2005 -- dig holes--set posts--wrap treated rim boards inside and outside of posts--then fill dirt--then pour concrete flush to rim board. after cutting posts flush to rim boards, i used excess treated posts to "fill" gaps between posts and rim boards, which creates continuous nailing surface for perimeter stud walls. local building inspector approved everything. i filled up to 5 inches of rim board, for a 5 inch concrete slab. i used a number 6 wire mesh reinforcing web set at 2 1/2 inches (middle of slab), and secured the wire mesh to the rim boards by using 5/8 rebar "pins" in holes drilled at 2 1/2 inches down from top of rim board. this ensured the mesh stayed in the center of the slab at the perimeter.

Cause basically I'm going to have to dig up
roughly 12-14" inside the posts anyway to have
enough depth for my base and slab?

concrete
vapor barrier
pink foam board
gravel
sand

we built up the base to make it level AFTER posts holes were drilled and the frame was done had about a 2 foot drop from one side to the other.. 80lx40w with a 16 foot leanto addon open to the inside running the 80 foot lenght on the west side. The bottom girt on mine makes the concrete form.

Don’t see what you’re asking as a problem. How deep is your frost line in OH? I see a lot of post frame buildings & pole barns built first then slab poured. I think mostly because they are considering a slab later. As long as you get those post squared I see no reason not to do the slab first with the post imbedded in it.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
