On a 40x60x14 barn what would be a good pole spacing ( 8 foot or 10foot ) and then trusses ever 4’ or every 8’, I plan to buy prefabricated trusses for the barn any suggestions or input

Most Pole Buildings I have seen have posts @10, w a truss in center, or 8', w truss in center.

So, 5', or 4' OC trusses... and 2x6 purlins at usually around 30" c-c.

Make sure your posts are CCA "Foundation" grade, and your gable end posts run full height and get cutoff during gable end erection.

For a 14' wall I would want 8' oc., and at minimum 6"x6"., min 4' deep.

8' on the posts. My builder did 8', but 10' on the ends. I would have preferred 8ft. Adding my interior walls was a challenge.

4' on the trusses is OK, but if you're planning on putting up anything other than a metal ceiling, closer might be better. You'll end up having to add a bunch of structure to it anyway to prevent sagging.

All I said that if it were mine..... post at 8' and trusses at 2'. Way easier to finish everything off. You can spend more for oversized lumber, or pay cheaper for standard sized lumber. Plus more strength.

A general question. Why is the norm apparently 8' for the posts. Jakemedic's pics show some really thick posts although I can't tell exactly what they are. Wouldn't more thinner posts work just as well and maybe not require such heavy top plates too?

This is interesting. My builder, which has offices in multiple northern states, builds posts on 8' centers with trusses on the same posts. So trusses every 8'. 2x4 purlins laid on top of the trusses. Bottom of the trusses are ceiling rated.

2' truss spacing allows for drywall ceiling, 4' is fine for metal panel ceiling. Half my building is 2' and the other half is 4'. Same roof pitch and snow load rating across all of it.

You need to look at the engineered truss sheet and make sure your trusses can handle the weight of a ceiling. For your answer you should be talking to the truss company. I've been through trusses that were minimum specand it's not any fun.. Call your truss company and talk to an engineer about your intended dead loads.

Resurrecting a thread I was about to start. I'm curious if you DIYed it, maybe getting some friends to help lift and set trusses, or if it was all on a contractor's crew.

I very much like the post and truss spacing equal, like 8', even if it required double trusses. No header/truss carriers, fewer parts, fewer connections, and the truss sits on the post, not off to one side. But I suspect heavier trusses also. And of course ceiling considerations, which I don't have.

Hard to find also. So far all I've found is Hansen and FBi that seem to do this. If I didn't have to have sealed drawings, I'd be tempted to do myself and just get sealed truss drawings.

Thank you on advance!
