okay.... you got me.... your Dayton is a re-branded Thorsen 77JC, but the "pat pend" part is puzzling.
not sure I've seen a patent number on a Thorsen 77C, JC, or MC. (1/2", 3/8", and 1/4" respectively.)

I suspect it's for the 81 patent, for an improved pawl. The ejector patent was in 84. The patent for the improved pawl was applied for in 79. 4,261,233 was the patent number.

Probably one of, if not The earliest Thorsen 3/4" drive sets. The earliest catalog pictured set that I know of has a metal box which I have, but the socket set in that one which is also pre tool number has beveled working ends while these sockets are both thicker and non beveled.

My circle TT 3/4 adapter is cut so square it doesn't work in any other brand of socket I have Looks like your ratchet might be about the same

There is definitely some weirdness about the ejector patent vs catalog dating. Here are my ejector ratchet pictures and some other closed ratchets.

Here are a few Thorsen ratchets, I find the “Companion” branded one to be interesting as it looks exactly the same as the 77 to me. Need to do a little more research on that one.

The Companion has a snap ring holding the gear in. I have never seen a Thorsen 77 (or P&C for that matter) with a snap ring on an open gear ratchet.

Ah, maybe not a Thorsen product then. Alloy artifacts mentioned that Thorsen never patented this ratchet mechanism and so I’m sure plenty of companies also used the design. Thanks for the sharp eye!

This empty Thorsen red box arrived in the mail yesterday. The seller described it as a metric socket set box although I’m not sure how he came to that conclusion. Since I have an SAE set in an identical box, I have decided to go ahead and make it a metric set. I probably have the missing sockets in the Bay Area. Here is the partial set along with my other Thorsen red box sets.

I don't think I have a Thorsen 1/4" set in a red steel box.... I believe all of mine are in steel boxes painted that blue-green color.
I see Thorsen 1/4" SAE sockets and socket sets listed as "metric" on Ebay frequently. I think they see the part numbers and assume the sockets are metric sizes. (e.g., 6M, 7M, 10M, 11M, etc.)
No idea how that confusion would carry over to boxes though.

A couple of metric combos from the 1970s-80s, a 1970s 5/8 deep, 1950s 25/32, and a 70s-80s 3/4 made for Powr-Kraft. I noticed that on the Powr-Kraft there is one detent missing. I think I have noticed this before on Thorsen but I could be mistaken.

I’m certain that one was loaned to a friend or neighbor and never returned. Maybe one of them moved away, which is why it wasn’t on the same street.

I got this Thorsen Allied 1/2 combo today. Normally I would have passed it by because most of them are Japan, India, or Taiwan, but this one was made in West Germany. I looked on TESS and it says that the Thorsen Allied trademark was first used in 1965, and according to a 1977 price list they used "Thorsen Allied II" so I guess this wrench is from the late 60s or early 70s. It also has the offset on the open end pointing towards the right if viewed from the top and the only two German companies that I can find who did that were Belzer and Dowidat. But they could have been made by a lesser known (at least to me) brand.

So thanks to Private Lugnutz sending me hunting for something in the garage, I also located this odd little Thorsen that I put in an unlikely place a few years ago.

Does anyone know when this is from or if this skinny little feller had a special use?

That size isn't available in either the 1933 or 1938 catalog, and unless I'm mistaken at that point Thorsen's double-end box wrenches had a more round (or oval) shaped shank, unlike your model above.
Something about that piece speaks "aircraft" to me, but that's pure speculation on my part.

I have a Matco wrench, SWP100, listed as a brake bleeder, 1/4 & 3/8", but with (relatively) very deep offsets for such a small wrench. So I was thinking, not brake bleeding, as it were.

I'm at a loss on that one. The early catalog snips above are from the time when Thorsen was stamping "TT" on tools.
The more recent catalog pages are from the 1950s.
I cannot recall what the time frame was when Thorsen used the "stylized" "T" (with the serifs) on their tools. Not sure if Alloy-Artifacts.org puts a date range on that feature.
I have no Thorsen information between the 1938-1939 catalog and the late 1950s stuff.

Sadly, when he passed a thief broke into his old shop and made off with some of his stuff.

I found this Thorsen wrench last Friday. I hadn’t seen one before so I took some time doing some rust removal and cleaning it up as much as possible to preserve it.

I GOT IT!!
At long last, I have acquired the one missing brand of the VeeGee Thorsens! Call 'em V groove, Streamline or raised+lowered panel, their distictive styling captured me. After a several-year search, I finally laid my hands on a 1" combo in pretty darn good condition. As you can see, it has some rust, but its mostly superficial. It's sitting in the tub of EvapoRust right now, and I expect a gentle kiss of the wire wheel after it's out will restore its beauty.
So, I now have at least one example of everyone of the 16 brands of the VG pattern ever made!!
(until another brand surfaces, anyway)
