post up your workbench storage

Looking for pics of workbenches with storage built in.I'm talking about things like rolling cabinets under your workbench , storage under,above etc.not just a workbench but a whole storage unit with the workbench built in and any cool unusual things built in the bench like Reese hitch etc.. I'm getting ready to redo mine and I'm looking for ideals.thanks

Have posted in another thread with more pics, but this is what I put together. I welded a rack to hold the bins individually so I could pull them out one at a time. Works great for me.

I'm going to cheat a little bit. This isn't actually my workbench (it's just an 18mm ply cabinet) but it occasionally fills in for a workbench. Hopefully you'll like the storage and overlook the little bit of definition stretch.

This is my parts storage cabinet:

It uses Akro-Bins on top, and Sortimo T-Boxxes on the bottom. The cool thing about Sortimo boxes are that washers and whatnot cannot migrate over the tops of the removable cups, even if you turn the case sideways (there's even a handle to allow it to be carried that way):

They also sell very large cups that are capable of holding tools alongside the parts that they go with:

This parts storage has made a tremendous difference in my ability to find the part I'm looking for. But it didn't come cheap. The Sortimo boxes are outrageously expensive, but once I had seen them, I could not un-see them.

Damn. That makes me want T-Boxxes. I have several L-Boxxes and a few other types of plastic parts boxes for tools and fasteners but thinking the Ts would be better for the fasteners. Where do you find them here in the states?

Maybe this will be of interest.

I used pallet racking to build workbenches and storage. A lift table can be slid under the bottom area of the left bench and the right bench is set up to fit roll around toolboxes and carts under so I can gain workspace by pulling them out. The small black cart contains all the tools I commonly need to work on motorcycles so I can limit the amount of back and forth to get tools when working on bikes. The blue bins over the right bench are for storage of incomplete projects.

Very nice, did you make the cabinet? Also, do you know of a good domestic source for the Sortimo cases?

Not the same quality of Sortimo but the leevalley.com Allit Economy Case is a cheaper alternative at $18.50 each.

There is also the Stanley version but I like the multiple colored bins in the Sortimo and Allit versions.

Yep. It's 18mm sandply glued, screwed, and pocket jointed together. Right behind the Sortimo compartments, there's a false back running the width of the cabinet that essentially makes the construction into kind of an I-beam shape to avoid any sagging. Behind that are more shelves (accessible from the back) for more Akro-bins.

I found the best price directly from Sortimo USA. About $62 per case, depending on configuration. That's marginally better than the only other retailer selling them online in the US (at the time -- that might have changed). Sortimo USA doesn't sell them online, though -- you've got to contact thuggins (at) sortimo.us and ask for a quote. It helps at that point to know which model (configuration) you want, and how many.

Agreed. Those are a good alternative, especially given the price. My one complaint with the Allit organizers are that some of the space is used up by a filler piece that doesn't interchange with any of the other pieces, limiting the capacity / utility to some degree. I bought one of them when I was evaluating all the non-Sortimo alternatives.

Yep. The Stanley version also has a limited selection of cups (only two, IIRC) and some of them can't fit in some spots. But they're *way* cheaper.

I didn't post the pic, but I'm reasonably certain they're Husky 8-bin organizers. I have a couple and they're a decent bin, although sometimes I wish they had side latches as well as front latches since the plastic lid is a bit flimsy.

I have handled the Stanley box and I did not like it because of the limited bin sizes, the bins were slightly deformed and I know this is petty but the color.

There are actually two different Allit boxes: "economy" and (I think) "pro". I think the Allit "economy" boxes would be my second choice, after the Sortimo boxes. They are certainly not as robust as the Sortimo boxes, much more like the common Plano / Flambeau parts trays, but with the addition of nice removable cups. Really, the Allit is an excellent compromise, especially on the point of price. I wish they were bigger, and I wish the filler piece wasn't there, but if I ignore those two points, they are still head and shoulders above every other option (except Sortimo).

Yup, Husky. About $14 at Home Depot.

I made my work bench out of pallet rack. The top is 10' long and I was able to get 3 roller cabinets without casters and two 2 drawer file cabinet underneath for tool storage.
