Hey guys,

So I was at an auction this weekend and picked up a nice wilton machinist's vice for 35 dollars. They had a couple of post vise's that i just ignored. Upon researching the wilton I ran across some post vise info saying that they are very useful and hold up to a beating better than a standard vise. Is there any truth to this? What advantages do post vise's have over bench mounted units.

Thanks!

Don't know about taking a beating better than oother vises but if it were mounted on a post instead of a bench, you would have 360 degree access to whatever you had clamped in it. I have been seeing them also, and have heard they have some monnetary value.

I assume you are talking about the type of vise that bolts to the top of a post and has a support leg that goes to the ground.

Blacksmith's vise. I have a few of them, if they are complete they are worth some money. I have one that is mounted on a tractor wheel center and a 6 inch pipe. It is easier to get to than my Wilton so it gets used more. They are used mostly for hot work, twisting hot metal is no problem but twisting cold metal will rack the jaws. I think they look cool!:)
