Howdy Ya'll,
I was just wondering what you guys do to a tool after you are done with it for the day. Is it a quick wipe with an oily rag, a careful clean and lub? I know that it is a bit vague but I don't have any one tool in mind just through out what you do.

I was gonna ask something like this about ratchets, since I recently restocked my drawers with nicer ones phasing out the ****. What do you use for oil, how often and any other tricks to extend the life.

If there's gobbs of grease/dirt/oil I'll wipe it off but thats about it. My tools are for work not show. I'll soak my screwdrivers/etc.. and brush em off every 6 months or so but thats about it. Tools make my money every day, and I have yet to see a dirty tool hinder my ability :D Really I guess it comes down to, Everything is strictly organized and easy to find but, at the end of the day, I'm out! not sticking around to polish a set of wrenches that are going to get dirty tommarow.
p.s. I've never had to "oil" any of my tools other than ones from snap-on to keep them from rusting in my box. Not being a hater, just saying...

If you were replying to me about the oiling, I never have either. But I have seen it mentioned on here before and didn't know if it was common practice or not. I am not extremely **** about my tools, just hate jumpy ratchets.

^^ No, not at all. As i kinda mentioned, I used to wipe my SO impact sockets and pliers with oil fairly regularily, otherwise they'd just rust away. I've also never really heard of the practice other than on here.
In general just respect your tools and use them properly, you shouldn't have any problems. 90% of my current setup came from the SO and matco truck, I bet its been 2 years since I warrantied a tool! Use the right tool every time and they'll last a lifetime, for the most part, little maitenance required?

Cool, I wasn't sure if I was the crazy one NOT tearing my ratchets apart after each use lol, good to know I have been doing something right all along:D

The tools I use underground get a spray with CRC if they get wet or about once a month I might lay them out and give them a spray. The tools I use in the shop get a wipe if they get wet, oily or greasy but a tool polisher I am not.

No not that, I should have said CRC 2.26 or 5.56 lubricant/dispersant. You are right CRC is a brand.

Try the 2.26 if you get it for free, its about$30 a can out here Vs about $10 for the 5.56, the 2.26 is mostly used for electrical where as 5.56 is more general purpose.

I have always dunked my ratchets in ATF about once a year and give all my tools a wipe down after using them. I blow out power tools if I have been using them in dusty conditions.

I wipe off any oil or grease and throw them in a drawer. Done.

If they get dirty, I wipe the chrome tools down and hit them with brakecleaner to get the grease film off them. Black oxide finish gets cleaned the same as chrome and some might get a coat of what ever rust penetrating oil I have nearby.

One thing I've never seen guys do but Metabo recommends. Run my angle grinder at full speed and put an airgun to the airports on the back, that flushes a lot of dust out of the grinder.

IF they get really nasty they get wiped down before getting put up, if not they go back in the box... Then every year or 2 I find myself out in the garage cleaning tools, getting cob webbs out from behind the compressor and anything else I can think of to keep me from working on something I really don't feel like working on that day.
