Nothing wrong with being a shade tree mechanic, that's natural air conditioning. Unfortunately, they don't have a natural heater for winter.

The first time I went to the HOT ROD magazine offices at 5959 Hollywood Blvd., I parked in the lot behind the building and there was a small shed and a Californa pepper tree with a chain fall on a sturdy branch. There were some engine swaps featured in HRM, CAR CRAFT and R&C that were performed in the shade of that tree in the late fifties

my carriage house isnt large enough to get a vehicle and a wrench inside, so I have to work on the patio next to it, this spring I did a frame down upgrade on my crawler.

Don't like the look of that set-up.......three legged stands with it perched so high......be VERY careful. One wrong pull could bring that thing down on you. Stable wooden cribbing either front or back would improve things.

Just started renting a new house. Old garage/shed at the end of the dirt driveway has a dirt floor, so it'll be a bit before I get my tools in there. Just going to dig it out level and put some pallets with some particle board for a solid floor. For now I'm stuck wrenching it the dusty driveway.

Can not wait to buy a house with a shop someday...

Might be sturdier than you think. Cribbing would leave precious little space under the car. But on your main point, a secondary support is necessary. A failure of one tripod and the thing tumbles down. Here in CA we never know when a small shaker will occur. So we don't do things like that.

On the point, I too work in a carport but have no trees. My chainfall is inside on a center beam. I have to clear the garage of 2 cars to access it. At least I have one.

I like this thread. Where are the likes? :)

Edit: OK, found the stars.

Maybe so, but it looks like a moderate wind would cause it to rock. Was thinking of catching that front bumper/frame on something a little more sturdy.

Anyways, I'd never get under that.........made it this far, why gamble now.

That whole set-up reminds me too much of these.

They are way stronger than you think, they are rated at 3500 lbs each (more than the whole Jeep weighs). They are V-Head pipe stands for welders, and I use the v-head on the frame, I have run and shoved it sideways, 250 lbs I weigh and I can only at my best effort get it to wobble (it was something everyone who sees it on the stands wanted to see next as you can imagine). I'm in Wyoming, on I-80, we routinely have 40+ mph winds. I trust those stands more than any other stand including a 2 post lift, Ive seen plenty of vehicles fall off of a lift, nothing falls off these stands or they wouldnt use them in the oil field and pipe-line industries. Some more information on the stands - http://www.sumner.com/sumner/sub/productb/main.27.7.9.27.0.0.html

Im not willing to pull my axles back off lol, but I would be happy to put it back on the stands and shoot some video of trying to knock it over :)
