Here in Michigan the rules on rivers and creeks for public access is the log rule. If the body of water is deep enough to float logs, then the public can walk the river / stream bed. Great Lakes are public to high water mark on the beach. Very few private beaches are around and most are very small. In the order of 40-100’ wide spots. All you do is walk the water edge, public land.
Similar here in NY. They use the term "navigable" but, unless I read it wrong, the creek or river bottom belongs to the land owner. I read it as I could float and paddle, but not stand in creek.

That looks big enough for my bass boat and trailer. Can you level the ground a bit for me. Lol.

Here's a picture of the driveway entrances to Martha Stewart's Bedford farm. No signs. Imagine the hidden security cameras...probably one in the mailbox, lol.

If you try to keep your driveway discreet, you'll get more people thinking they can go in without being seen. Make it look like you are serious and you'll discourage them.

It's about 12' wide - a little more at start of hedge row. My bil's 2004 Tundra made it but I have not tried my Outback. That is part of work, to grade that for a car. It's all bedrock outcroppings. Google "alvar geology" to get an idea. the stretch from the bottom of the field to river is all rock with a number of 10 to 20" "steps". Sure, the field third could be a dirt road with no work, but the other 2/3 requires a lot of work.

Nice property, love the 1000 Islands region. Anyway, no legal advice, just experience. Get to know your neighbors, enlist them in your privacy as you assist them in theirs.

After looking at your pics I'd clear out that entrance & put up a metal farm gate with a lock. That could be done in a few hours and you could use the gate there or somewhere else on the property later. The mailbox isn't a bad idea either. Right now it's too inviting to locals who have been using it for years and probably think nobody cares. Need to explain to them that it's under new management. Honest folks will get the hint.

I lived in Chicago burbs for 30 years before moving here. There, things stolen from yard, car stolen from garage, a lot of attention to locking up. Probably should of had an alarm system, many did.

Here, I leave tools out on my garage construction, usually dont lock car, have left wallet and keys in it, and don't feel compelled to lock doors in house but my wife does. Rather amazing.

So I have reached out to neighbors at river property but no responses. Mostly vacant property like this. (I'd like to buy the equal size piece to one side! Not sure I know how to approach them to make it happen.)

I think some posts and a chain might fit better than a gate but will consider both. So much stone, I thought two stone posts with a chain (and solar post lights on top) might be appropriate.

relevant NY article:
So, there's still no purple paint law in New York!
This thread needs to end.
You're gonna do what You think is right in your own mind. Someone is going to trespass and steal your ****. Then, you're gonna build a fence and a gate, probably paint it purple.
Pathetic.

I'm planning a gate of some sort, and no trespassing signs at the gate. Utility pole remnants or stone piers with a chain is what I'm thinking about now.I was looking forward to purple paint on the edges of the property. If there was ever access from the river, I might put no trespassing signs there. Right now 30' or so of solid cattail and reaching out to DEC about a dock.....someday.

I guess someone could steel my trees, weeds, top soil, and stones, but not too concerned.

Besides gate and signs adjacent, I'm undecided, just hopeful purple paint bill passes. That would make sides of lot easier to keep marked

In rural California to charge criminal trespassing you would need either a fence or signs every 300'. I found that adding signs to our non-fenced land did reduce cars and trucks driving on the property. Now they turn around in the street. lol. I doubt it would stop criminals except for the laziest though. But as your land is not developed I'm not sure why people are telling you to post signs.

As far as liability goes I wouldn't ask insurance company reps. I would ask an appropriate lawyer.

Large, very obvious video cameras seem to scare people away. I have recorded quite a few cars and trucks turning around before getting to our property since adding the cameras. We live at the end of a cul-de-sac so no reason to come our way unless visiting us or being nosey.

Chains/cables across drives can be dangerous as they can be hard to see and you might be held liable if someone ran into it. I think a gate is a better choice.

So I bought 10 signs that comply with NYS laws. Looking at gates at TSC. I'd get the red ones - heavier duty - but can't decide on two 6' or one 12'. And then posts - treated cedar or foundation grade pt 6x6. And sackrete or quickkrete, dry or mix (1/4 mile from river and it's not potable). Was thinking I get that nasty wrap stuff and put around post at ground level.

I can't vouch for how well they work, but I have seen a few signs which say "Warning, I have both a shotgun and a backhoe. If you trespass, you will never be seen again."
