I am not sure if this the right place to post as there is not really a construction thread but I have gotten some great advice on here in the past.
I live in PHX Az and I am wanting to put 2 to 3, 4x4 or 4x6 posts right next to my back cinder block fence. The purpose of the posts will be to attach a shade sail between the posts and my existing patio cover. I know to do the shade sail correctly it has to be attached with tension on all 4 corners. I am not worried about the patio supporting the tension but I am concerned with the posts.
I want to put the posts as close to the cinder block wall as possible and I know they will need some sort of footing and the wall itself is not solid to I can not brace the post against it. The wall is hollow cinder block and is the kind that interlocks with a little mortar so it is only maybe 6 inches thick and not strong at all. So my question is, how large of a footing would I need? The posts would be about 9-10' tall max and they will be attached to the footing with metal post bases attached to the footing. We have had termite issues with other patio posts so I need the posts attached above grade.
The other concern is hitting the wall footing while digging the footings for the post. On my side of the wall my yard is probably 2-3' feet above the actual wall footing as my fence backs up to a green belt area. I guess I might not even hit the wall footings but that makes me wonder if my soil is packed enough to support the post footings. I am trying to do this myself and have no issues with this kind of basic work, but just want to make sure I do it right the first time.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
