I just got a quote for 4 pot lights installed for $650. These lights would be in a second story bedroom with access to the attic. I think that sounds like a bit to much? I have no clue what would be involved, but the lights are relatively cheap.

Get a couple more quotes and compare. Ask them what is involved. There may be more to it than you would guess. New circuit, running new switches, permit? You'll then have an accurate gauge of what it will cost to have them installed in you area.

Your quote should have a cost breakdown for materials, labor, permits, and misc. So what are your breakdowns? Is this all new wiring from the breaker box or is the existing wiring to ceiling fixtures going to support new fixtures? Heck of a lot of difference in the two scenerios.

If existing wiring then perhaps even you can do this since you have attic access

So if your lights are $60 a piece times 4 is $240 plus wire another $30.
So materials might be under $300. Is the difference worth it to you?

If the lights are $60 at a box store...they are likely just as higher or higher at your electrician's favorite supply house AND he is going to mark them up to you.

And, he has to mark them up to you. He's taking several risks when he buys them, like you may change your mind and want to return them, he may get them and you decide you don't want to do the project, he may install them and not get paid by you, he may get paid but a year from now you call him up and want a refund for whatever reason, etc.

If he sells you the lights, he's got risk. He needs to be paid for that risk, or he won't stay in business long.

Get another quote or two, then you will know.$650 seems a bit on the high side, but not excessively so and may be what the local pricing is at.

Typically I quote $135.00 per can installed; and that includes switching, wire, fixture, etc. Your quote might be a little higher then I'd expect, but on the other hand, I wouldn't expect them installed for any less then $400. I'd get a couple more quotes.

As you probably already know retro fitting cans can be a real *****, trying to get them to line up and look perfect in an un-perfect ceiling, so its often times worth the cost to hire these out.

Thanks guys, this quote was from a friend of a friend. I just kinda wanted to gauge what some of you all thought. One bedroom has wiring in the ceiling the other 2 do not. I was just asking for a qoute on one room that does not have wiring in the ceiling.
