I was hopeful to get my floor poured tomorrow or the next day, a guy pulls up over there and tells me they are starting to tear down the pump station across the street and will be blasting (The park system will take its place when vacant). He was finishing his survey up and said my pole barn didnt show up on google earth (its less 2 weeks old) he then said since I didnt have my floor poured yet that I should wait until they are done blasting (in a month or two) Arghhhh!! should I wait? I traded favors for the concrete guy to pur this and he gave me a cheap labor price, but wanted to do it soon (This week) Now I am not sure what to do? any advice?

My father in law did some blasting near dulles airport a month or two after it was completed. The big worry was the huge glass front of the airport.

The experts said "ANY" blasting within a mile would shatter the windows. The blasting guys called BS. The general contractor did get, at his expense, another layer of insurance but told the FiL to proceed.

They made fired several shots over the next few days and the vibration monitors that the experts attached to the windows....showed more movement from the people than they did for the blast. The experts never did back away from their predictions, even after the blast were complete.

The moral is, if they have qualified blast riggers, your slab should not be affected. If they do not have the right guy, that is where your questions should go.

I'm sitting here thinking he's talking about abrasive blasting tanks and stuff, at the pump station... Lol.. Like, how is that going to affect it? But you're talking about explosives.. Gotcha!

Yes, this is a sewage/pump station that is getting tore down, they are going to blast to demo this. The "Evaluator" that came by today while I was there, said he would not pour any concrete until they were done blasting, that could be up to two months, I was planning on pouring my slab this week.

If he is that concerned I would get out the camera with a time stamp and take photo's of your entire home, windows, foundation, all the interior walls etc... So you will have proof that the cracks were not there before they started blasting.

They were blasting by our house for storm water sewer a couple of years ago and they came through and took all the pictures. ended up they didn't have to blast near our house but better safe than sorry.

I would go ahead and pour the floor, or get it in writing from the demo company that they will cover the delay cost, it isn't your problem that they are blasting. Here it is the demo companies job to control their blast in such a way to not harm surrounding properties.

The site evaluator is doing you a favor by giving you a heads up and doing his own CYA. NO one sitting behind their keyboard here GJ has a clue on the topography of the land the pump demo, or your barn is sitting on. It may be connected underneath by solid rock or it may be just sandy soil... If it were my pour I would postpone. JMO though. Good luck on your decision.

Last summer when they were blasting to put the new sewer lines in to re-route the pipes, I was able to watch several different occasions, it was pretty neat. Now all that phase is done, they will demo this plant, it will become part of the park system. I do not live there, I actually live about a mile down the road. This property has a 115 Y.O farm house on it. I pretty much leveled the lot, tore a horse barn down. Finally getting around to building my part. I will probably go ahead and pour the floor, I will run this by my concrete guy. I did just talk to a demo guy about it, he didnt think it would damage it?!!

This guy was the site pre blast surveyor, his concern is that it could crack? My concern is, I have traded favors, and my concrete man is suppose to pour it this week because he is open, I am afraid if I wait two months, he will be real busy on retail jobs. Its about 22 yards of concrete-4" thick

So far I have spent all my time cleaning up the 1.5 acre property (Tore down a horse barn and leveled the lot). The house has been vacant for about 10 years, I have it cleaned out and partially gutted. Need to get the pole barn done. The house has mahogany floors in it. The chimney in the back is brick, it is by far the biggest. THe front two story is the original house, the back was added on, but is also old. I have been told that it was the first house in this area back in the early 1900's. The house has been somewhat remodeled several times, needs major overhaul. It is sealed and secure at the moment.
Its a neat old house
