Has anyone had any experience using a .22 cal powder actuated hammer tool to drive pins (w/washers) into asphalt? It's really poor asphalt and only 2 inches thick.
I realize it's not a strong hold but I'm only trying to keep something light from skating along the asphalt when the gusty wind kicks up. I'm not trying to hold anything down to the asphalt, just keep it from moving sideways.
My only concern is with safety, but if I can shoot into concrete I don't see a safety issue shooting into 2 inches of old, poorly compacted asphalt.
I don't have a hammer drill so drilling into the asphalt isn't so easy and I'd need to do that before hammering in even the smallest of rebar. I tried using a masonry bit in a regular drill and that was arduous and very slow. I tried drilling in a tapcon with the same drill but no joy. What's worked so far is hammering in a spike, pulling it and screwing in a tapcon.
I’ve managed to drive those tungsten nails in the 20+ year old concrete so it ought to go very easily into asphalt. You’ll have to check and see which load in which now works the best if you go that route.
Personally I take and drill and throw in the anchor type. Why, simply because I know it’s going to hold better and it’s actually a lot easier and probably even cheaper then doing a driven nail.
Anchor bolts work by exerting side pressure to grip. Asphalt concrete, that's it's correct name, never truly hardens. So side pressure isn't going to work.
Or ya could just drill a 1/2” or 3/8” hole down through to the dirt. Them take a piece of rebar 2- 2 1/2’ Long down as far as a sledge will drive it. Then fab up an end to hold it to your building. For me I’d weld on a big washer but if you don’t weld get creative.
Don’t think wind isn’t a serious issue and go with nails . Wind is far more powerful under certain circumstances than you would think so don’t take chances especially if it’s lightly framed.
Don’t worry about getting a hammer drill either. Just use a masonry but on your regular drill, nothin to it . 2’ of rebar in the ground isn’t goin nowhere. And it’s cheap to boot.
