This is going to be the first test case in my effort to powder coat. The Husky rachet is fine parts wise just not the exterior. I blasted the exterior to get rid of the rust, I'll need to grind/sand the metal to remove the chrome plating. What's the best way to do this?

Chrome is nasty stuff. Grinding it will put nasty stuff in the air around you. Take it to a metal shop and have them strip the chrome for you.

How will you protect the teeth inside the ratchet head? That is, if you powder coat those teeth, it will interfere with the ratcheting action and cause slippage, not to mention filling in the snap ring groove as well.

plan on using it daily? I would mask the knurling and the flat part of the head. If you do it successfully, I give the coating 3 years max before it begins to chip. I love PC'ing as much as everyone, but when it's exposed to impact (odds are, the head), over time, it'll chip away faster than a chrome plating.

Yeah but I'll bet he'll have the only powder coated ratchet on the block! If it lasts for a year, it doesn't seem like a big deal to do it again if he wants.

Have you picked a color yet 930dreamer?

Try duracoating. Go to gun forums or Pirate4x4(lots of info) Lots of guns are now duracoated. I think a desert tan ratchet would be cool.

Try to have it finished with a black phosphate coating.

I prefer black phosphate to most other finishes, it does not chip or crack. It gives excellent corrosion protection, and sacrifices itself to protect the steel.

It will also make the ratchet look different.

I have an old Gold Plating Specialists machine I use for rust removal, I just need to find some inexpensive chems and I could do a nickel plating run on a bucket of our ratchets easily.

I had an old rusty Plomb half inch drive ratchet that I decided to powder coat when I rebuilt it. A member here did the powder coating for me. It was under $20 for the work plus shipping there and back.

I've done a few. I used an epoxy clear and haven't had any chipping issues.

That being said, I have 2837573935967 ratchets, so it doesn't get used too often.

In order: Sandblast, acetone dip, air dry, Degas in oven for 10 minutes at 400° f (or whatever you bake at), let cool to 80°f, mask(I use silicone plugs from Eastwood), shoot it with color, oven for 15mins, done.
