Hi, moving a bit further with the restoration of the drill press and lathe

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=304323

and I have a question, since everything I clean the old grease off starts to rust imidiately in the damp Danish winter, I´m thinking about powdercoating stuff instead, I have tried searching but without luck.. would it ruin the gears to powdercoat them all over, including the teeth ?

Perhaps you could just powder-coat the areas that do not come into contact, such as the sides of the gear.

You could powder coat the center of the wheels. But as far as the teeth just a light coating of grease or oil. That should stop the rust. Or you could prime and paint the center section of the gears just for looks.

Go to Caswell.com and get a small electroless nickel plate kit. Give them a flash of nickel and you're good to go.

As others have mentioned, powder won't work on the gear teeth due to excessive coating thickness.

I suggest either zinc phosphate or manganese phosphate coating. These coatings are porous. So, they will hold oil for good corrosion resistance. The phosphate coatings also add greater adhesion for paint or powder. If you desire, one could mask off the critical surfaces (gear teeth, bore and faces that contact other parts) and paint or powder coat the gears.

You can only paint or coat the hub portion, even then some have such a close running fit that the added thickness will wear off in short order. Your best bet for using machines is just to keep them oiled and at a constant temperature. If you want to store them long term a heavy grease/wax or similar protective coating would be best. As mentioned above, for most machine gearing, the paint will be worn off on the teeth in short order due to fit and bearing surface contact.

thanks everyone for the answers, I´ll keep the teeth oiled instead, the only thing I have a problem with is the constant temp, where we live now, I have a small un-isolated shed, and as were renting that's what I need to settle with for now, the Danish winter is tough on the tools, but ill just have to give them a little more TLC in these months :)

Just thinking out loud: would something from the firearms world like Birdsong Black T or Robar NP3 work?
