Hiya,

Does anyone have any experience with powder coating. I recently started using powder coat for restoration projects and am using a basic bench top "toaster" oven from Eastwood for curing but I need to go larger. I've looked at electric smokers but I need to get to 450 degrees and most of the smokers don't go that high.

Thanks

Yep, oven works well. If you are up to it you can mount some hooks from the top to hang the parts off

I did the CL oven thing, $40 IIRC. The only thing was I had to put a 240 outlet in the garage. Not a big deal, just something to consider.

one of the videos from "Den of Tools" bear guy visited a gun shop in las vagas, that guy gutted out an old fridge and converted it to a powder coat oven... top and bottom looks to be a 240v oven coil.. the foam is gutted out. rubber seals are gutted... 1x1 tubing are skeletons... and insulation are either those fire bricks or kaowool..

WatchJRGo made a powder coating oven. He took a double oven and converted it. $125 all in.

I recently got into powder coating myself. I use a Smoke Hollow 30" Electric w Glass window. The smoker needs to be modified by removing inner metal sides (held in by screws) and placing insulation on all sides. Then put the metal back in. Top, 3 sides and bottom

Once I did that it gets up to just about 450 degrees for me although most of my powders flow around 400 degrees. The glass window allows me to see flow out as well.

The smoker needs to be 1500 watt version.
Takes about 20 mins to get to 400 degrees

~There is a video of someone doing this mod as well.

Haven't built a propane one, but I converted an 6' x8' x 10' Conex into an electric oven, bought 10 oven elements, recessed 3 into each side, one on the back wall, and 3 more on the floor.Steel studded all the way around the inside including floor and ceiling, and then the most dense 4" fiberglass insulation I could get, covered with 16g galvanized sheeting on walls and ceiling, and 3/8" alum plate on the floor..I put a recirculating fan in there as well..The elements are covered with 3/4 x 9 exp metal...It works great, the outside temp is that of the outside, inside temp can get 500+

I don't think they recommend any open flame such as gas or propane

Most industrial ovens are natural gas fired as it isn't feasible to heat them with electricity.

Alot of guys going with propane as you can get really good heat up times and support larger ovens.

The propane ovens I've seen were heated with a torpedo heater with a pid controller.

So natural gas and propane are pretty common in oven's... but yes an open burner inside a powder coating oven wouldn't be a good idea lol

Is there any electric smoker that will do 400F? Around 40 inches tall inside.
I'm having a really hard time finding anything.

By mistake I purchased pit boss 7, but it uses pellets that get wet and get stuck, blocking the auger and requiring disassembly to get it going...

Would love to have something electric that can plug into 110v outlet, but can't seem to find anything.

A few years back I found a smoker on sale at TSC that would get up to 450 degrees. I also did what Matt, above, talks about. All the inner panels were pop riveted so I drilled them out, added water heater insulation, and riveted the panels back in. I also installed a door seal intended for high heat. The heating element is what determines max heat, though. As someone stated, you need 1500 watts in this configuration. Isn't this the limit before you need to go to 220v?

I powder coat my cast bullets, use a toaster oven, 400 degrees for 20 minutes. I would definitely look for a gas oven for bigger parts, and change to propane. The older ovens use a pilot light and don't even need electricity.

Thr regular oven is too small, I like the smoker, it got lots of space.

Can I just add a heating element to it like this one?

Ceramic kilns can be found used really cheap. Easy to convert to PID controller. Still need 220v.
