Powder coating question

We have an old metal floor furnace grate that my wife would like to powder coat. She's looked at high-temp but can't find a color that she wants so we are looking at powder coating. My question is once a metal object has been powder coated, what kind of heat can it be exposed to?

Or, do we need to ceramic coat it instead?

Thanks,

Ray

Temps up to a couple hundred degrees are no problem for most all powder coats. If your furnace grates are getting hotter than that you have a burn risk.

If this is a furnace floor register, or grate it should not see temps over 140 from a gas furnace lower from a heat pump. Powder coat should be fine.

This right here no need at all for high temp. I have powder coated plenty of them and just did an old steam radiator for a guy restoring an old house. I should know this but would have to check my suppliers books but if memory serves most regular powders can see temps in the 300 range for extended periods of time.

Powder coating does not like heat and will eventualy flake.

We have powder coated many many Harley cylinders, heads and cases that have lasted for years without any problems. I have powder coated V8 engine blocks without issue...it will take a quite bit of heat.

They do make a Hi-Temp powder. Have a buddy who does snomobile restoration and he has had the exhausts powder coated on both of the sleds hes done...They arent "Daily Drivers" but they do see the trails...exhausts look brand new 2-3 years later.

I have/had done the bottom cases on my wife's street bike years ago and they still look brand new.A heater grate should be fine with regular powder,no problem.

Most powder coaters I have used have told me it is not heat tolerant and will flake and I have seen it so I guess some can no produce a coating that is heat tolerant. :)

I have to admit I do like the ceramic coat for cleaning.
