Powdercoating Oven

Hi I'm new to the garage journal board and am looking into getting an oven for powdercoating.

Does anyone have any input on how an air fryer oven by Kapas (model # KPS-AF02M) would work compared to a large Oster toaster oven (model # TSSTTVDGXL-SHP) that is reportedly popular?

I initially tried to include Amazon links to these products but I can't include them because I haven't posted anything to this forum yet.

Thanks

Would you be concerned at all that the air fryer might have air circulating through it and potentially disturbing your powder prior to it fusing?

I have no experience with that particular model, but airfryer models move a lot of air, like " blow your toast around" volume. Some operate as conventional ovens in bake mode.

I'd have to install 240V circuit and make an oven install more permanent. Ultimately I'd like to have a larger oven, maybe with more capacity than a kitchen oven. My thought about a toaster oven or air fryer is I can have a decent size to start with useing 120v and it is more portable. I was thinking the air fryer would heat up faster and distribute heat more uniformly than the toaster oven.

Thanks

Toaster ovens work fine for small parts.

House hold oven can be repurposed as is just never cook food again.

Large oven can be built from a metal trash can, oven element and thermostat with the proper precautions on wiring, shock, fire hazards.

No matter the oven ventilation is critical PC does produce fumes.

The trash can is a great idea for a larger, inexpensive homemade oven. It can also be portable to move outside and allow for better fume managment. Thank you!

Rather than reinventing the wheel right at the outset, I'd recommend at least trying the hobby first to see if you even enjoy it. Far too many fall for all those Youtube videos about "easy" it is and how rich you can get overnight, invest heavily at the outset and end up selling all their equipment at half price to the next guy.

Thanks for the advice, I've been there done that with other stuff. My issue is that I used to get powder coating done at a very reasonable rate then I moved to an area where everyone wants $150 to powder coat a couple small parts.

Oh I definitely get it. Obviously there is a lot of overhead with any business but a lot of it is for the same reason why the same $500,000 tract home here costs $250,000 somewhere else that is not so popular.

I guess you could get one of these. And do decent sized stuff. https://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-hotcoat-4x4x6-240-volt-powder-oven.html

I have a buddy that has a PC shop at his metal fab business. It takes a lot of time to prep the parts. I bring him stuff that I’ve already blasted in my shop so his prep time is minimal. And when he runs black, I get it cheap tossing it in with all the other stuff. I can see how it’s costly when it takes time to blast, clean, coat, and bake the part.
His oven will fit a car and he has/is powdercoaiting his entire truck, the cab and bed are white, the frame is blue. just because he can I guess.

In typical GJ fashion, OP asks about repurposing a cheap toaster oven and someone recommends a $5,400 oven.

I know when I was first starting out with powder coating I picked up an old house oven off offerup for 25 dollars. That way if it didnt workout I only had 25 in that oven. I have out grown that by now with a 5x5x8 propane heated.

Good diversity of replies ... I'm just trying to get a few things I fabricated coated with a durable finish for a reasonable cost! No intention of ever starting another business. I did find someone "just starting out" and who is located where I will be traveling through soon so I mailed a couple things that I need finished which will fit in his oven. I can hardly wait for him to get a larger oven. Final cost is over half of what it would cost to have it done locally, even after shipping and a 30% tip. It also saved me a significant effort and $ building my own powdercoating setup. Although it would have been interesting learning a new hobby/skill my wife is very happy we don't have more stuff taking up shop space.

I looked on CL and found a really nice double oven, free to pickup.
It has served me well for over 5 years now...
It has a small convection fan, but I've not had any issues with it, in fact I always use the oven in convection to equalize the temperatures.
Honda engine cover I did for fun in red crackle..

I keep thinking about cutting out the divider between the oven to give me more capacity...
Or indeed building a new larger cabinet and installing the double ovens stuff into that, but not had the need... Yet!

Without 220 it would be almost impossible to get btu for larger oven. Thereare oven builds using propane . Caswell and other powder coat forums have build threads as well as here . Many have btu charts with wattage requirements .
