The electricians here are correct! That's right. By code tapping off of a separate line like that is not the way to do it.
There's a big difference between electronic technicians and electricians I've concluded. The technicians I know would and have done it the way I suggested, although it's not up to code.
The original OPs question all he's trying to do is supply an 12v a.c. adapter with 120v.
By code he would need a separate dedicated 120V line just for that outlet. My suggestion is how I would do it, how others have done it, but it's not the proper way to do it.
Over time code standards change. What was acceptable years ago is not today.
I've learned through all this just because something works for me doesn't always mean it's the correct thing to do, and I admit the electricians are correct.
