Watch eBay for a Kent Moore gm power steering analyzer. Used that one many times during my gm days, works well and they pop up on the bay fairly regularly. J-44721, iirc they usually sell for a little over $200.

I have never seen the KM p/s tester ever used , It has been hanging on the wall since 1987
you can usually diagnose pumps with the seat of the pants method

 That's the best tester out there. I don't know if it will work on your mini but it comes with an assortment of fittings to fit gm vehicles. The J44721 allows you to test pressure and flow which can identify a rack that's bypassing quickly. They're expensive from kent Moore but, it's handy tool to have. Most tool trucks sell a star power steeing pressure tester that's handy for measuring pump output but, lacks the capability to measure flow. They will help confirm pump issues though.

I don't know if it will ork on your Cooper as is, but it could be adapted fairly easily. As for using the tester, it only came out for the head shakers- strange noises and some of the low assist complaints as well. Its actually saved several people I know from condemning a perfectly good pump when all signs pointed to it, on those old lt1's a weak tensioner would mimick a bad pump and never squeal a belt.

Revival from '12 (see what that funny Search function can do?)....just wanted to say thanks again Fedwrench for actually answering the question and providing useful tech. Got me one ordered from ebay
