Power strip identification help . . .

Hello:

I was showing my Dad the work cart that I had completed this last weekend. I pointed out the unusual power strip that I had mounted to the side of the cart and the fact that a removable plug that feeds power strip. The power strip has no markings except for Hubbell on the plug and socket.

My Dad asked me the purpose for having a removable power feed. I didn't have an answer but it's handy to be able to disconnect the cord if I want to roll the cart elsewhere in the basement.

I was wondering if any of you had come across something like this and have any idea why that feature was added.

I picked the power strip up at a yard sale for $5.00 a few years ago and finally found a home for it.

like you said, its handy.. worst thing about a nice power strip is the cord is only one length

a sacrificial pigtail means when your ******* helper cuts it when he drops (insert sharp or spinning bladed tool here) on your cord to your workbench, you can just shorten the wire or get a new piece of wire and make a new cord.. or have a spare if said helper is a regular or there is no helper and ya made him up to cover up the fact your a clutz (lol sorry feeling wacky)

That is a distribution strip for a 19" rack cabinet. I've used many of them, great for the shop!

The reason for the removable cord is to be able to route either end through holes in the cabinet and also to remove the strip if the feed cable is tied to other cabling or the cabinet.

I like that power strip, the locking plug is awesome.

I have something similar on a roll-around tool cabinet I modified to add outlets to the back and inside for battery chargers... sorry no pictures here at work.

But I do note that we share a preference for work lights, is that a 2-bulb Dazor on your work-top or a magnifier?

Steve - it's a 2 tube fluorescent lamp.

My eyes are not getting any younger so I'm keeping my eyes open for a ring magnifier too.

Thanks for the Dazor brand reference. I just confirmed it's a Dazor Model 2324.

For my mobile (roll around) work bench I bought a 25' retractable extension cord, and cut the ends off both sides, and put a male on where the female was. I then wired the other side into two outlets that are cut into the bench. works out great, cord is always there to get power onto the bench, and it's especially nice to be able to roll it outside on a nice day and work.

I also have two vises mounted on opposite corners of it, so it's got all ya need to work.

It's all scrap wood, recycled casters off a tool chest, recycled outlets (from the it's still good so I won't throw it away pile), the little vise I had, the big one I got from the flea market for $25, and the most expensive part was the retractable cord (like $50)

Jim - very cool on the lamp and work table.

I've got a ring magnifier on one of my work tables and it is nice for the precision work. Found the one I've got at an estate sale for like $5.

Normally, a rack power strip would have an IEC power inlet on it... that is an odd twist-lock. Perhaps just very old?

No problem, it's one of those, it's so simple it's genius things. after the first time I used it, I didn't feel bad about cutting a perfectly good cord.

Great idea venturesome! I think it ranks right up there with many of the simple, but great ideas, I've seen on GJ. I've had a retractable extension hanging in my garage for 20+ years, but never thought of using it like that. Kudos to you for that idea. I'm certainly going to steal it!
