Power Supply 15v-28v, anyone?

One part of my garage hobby includes another hobby, a workplace for my radio controlled cars and airplanes.
I have just bought a Hyperion 0615i DUO3 charges on ebay, and now the search for a power supply begins.

I find plenty of power supplys from 12v-14v, but this charger wants from 15v-28v. This has proven to be difficult to find.

And the fact that I want a nice looking one, to sit on the top of my workbench adds to the problem of finding one.

Anyone here got any suggestions?

I've been looking at the Mastech units with variable voltage and amperage for a desktop electroplating setup. There are several models depending on what range of voltage and amperage you need. 0-15v, 0-30v, and 0-50v all seem to be pretty common.

Not sure what your budget is, but the nicer looking ones are a little pricey.

2 12v batteries in series, or on smaller electric pallet jacks that actually use 4 6v batteries in series parallel to get 24v

I suggest you look for a used high quality PS before you buy the Mastech, are you a member of the Caswell forums? There are a good amount of dead Mastech posts. I'm hoping mine lasts until I can get a better one, I need more amperage anyway, my Mastech is a 50A. If you do go with a Mastech make sure you install a blocking diode to protect it.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm only looking for something in the 5A range as I'll only be doing small fastener and bracketry for a rolling restoration on an old Volvo. I only started looking at the Mastech's because the small ones look to be identical to the little guy Caswell sells. I've only just started looking into this in the last couple days and will spend some more time reading over the caswell forums. If you have any suggestions about "high quality" brands to look at I'd appreciate it.

I'd look at electronic surplus stores. Here's a link to one; it's 0-40VDC, but only 0.5 amp (this isn't uncommon for laboratory power supplies, they often are pretty low current.)

Another possibility is to buy a single voltage power supply from a place like Power One. They generally have an adjustment screw so you can vary the output voltage a little.

That charger actually calls for 10 amps to fully utilize its capabilities. They have a few on Transcat, but there about $500.

I dont think those laboratory power supplies would look good in a garage setup.

Mastek (or TekPower) will be more than fine for your application. Do *not* get the switcher version. The HY3005D-3 is a great unit. You will not find anything like this for less than about $1500 in terms of performance, imo. I use 3 of them on a daily basis and even though they are about 5 years old they work fine. A friend has one as well and he uses his all the time. He has owned his for about as long as i have owned mine and zero problems. A guy at work also owns three of them and has had no problems after he returned one that was dead out of the box.

To test the overcurrent protection I cranked them up to 60V and shorted the positive directly to ground and left it connected for a little while...Disconnected the wire and the PS just worked as intended.

The hyperion is pretty nice. Mine is the 120V/12V version.

Ahhhh, Didn't know you were looking for a small one, I'm looking for something in the 400-600 amp range, chrome plating is a current hog. Lambda is good stuff, so is HP. What process are you going to be using? If you are looking for "chrome" like finish why not just go with Caswells electroless chrome, it's actual a cobalt plating kit, looks like chrome and you don't need a power supply and it's pretty much dummy proof (not calling you a dummy, some of their processes are a little tricky). If you are looking to do some chromate conversion coatings then you'd need the PS. Feel free to PM me if you need any help with anything.

I'm looking at the 1.5 gallon CopyCad system and maybe some yellow and black chromates. Nuts, bolts, small brackets, and other underhood doo-dads. I hate taking things apart on this old car, getting them working good, and then putting them back together with old grubby looking bolts.
